Agates, pyrites, quartz, jaspe… elles sont autant de fragments de l’univers, d’un monde où rêve et poésie dessinent des analogies avec le monde végétal et animal mais aussi avec celui des hommes. Cet ouvrage présente les 150 plus belles pierres de la collection de minéraux que Roger Caillois a léguée au Muséum national d’histoire naturelle de Paris, ainsi que la réédition des célèbres textes Pierres, L’Écriture des pierres et Agates pardoxales. Pour la première fois sera dévoilée une collection exceptionnelle créée par l’un des plus grands poètes du xxe siècle.

About the Author
Roger Caillois (1913-1978)Alors qu’il est élève de l’École normale supérieure, Roger Caillois rencontre avec André Breton et se lie d’amitié à la même époque avec Salvador Dalí, Paul Éluard, Max Ernst, René Char… Mais il rompt avec le groupe surréaliste dès 1935. Cofondateur, avec Georges Bataille et Michel Leiris, en 1938, du Collège de sociologie, Caillois rencontre la femme de lettres Victoria Ocampo, qui l’invite à séjourner chez elle en Argentine durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il dirigera ensuite l’Institut français de Buenos Aires avant de lancer la revue Les Lettres françaises.De retour en France, il anime chez Gallimard la collection La Croix du Sud, spécialisée dans la littérature sud-américaine faisant découvrir l’oeuvre de Pablo Neruda ou de Miguel Angel Asturias, et traduit les nouvelles fantastiques de Jorge Luis Borges.Poète, essayiste, Roger Caillois a publié une oeuvre prolixe, ses livres parlent de la guerre, du rêve, de la poésie, des mythes, de l’imaginaire....

Celebrated French sociologist Roger Caillois did not only put relevant ideas on game theories and spread the work of some of the most important Latin American authors as J. L. Borges in France. He also achieved an extraordinary collection of stones from all over the world. The book is both a selection of his collection, kept at the National Museum of Natural History of Paris, and a collection of essays including The Writing of Stones (1970). Beautifully illustrated, the book presents the stones in the fashion of a catalogue with one item per spread and occasionally matching the front and back of them in some spreads. Text in French, but images themselves are worth to be examined with keen eye.
