A must-have for success on the FE examination

In short, buy this reference and use it every day as you study for the exam. This is the exact same reference manual that you will be issued when you sit for the exam. No other references are allowed. Do yourself a favor: Become an expert in the use of the reference manual BEFORE exam day.

A searchable, electronic copy of the handbook may be displayed on the monitor during your computer-based examination. You should go to the NCEES website and download a copy of the handbook so you get used to using it. While there, you should also watch the video explaining how to search the onscreen handbook during your computer-based exam. Make sure you are studying from the latest version of the handbook (i.e., make sure your hard-copy matches the NCEES downloaded electronic version).

If you aspire to become working engineer, then you MUST obtain a professional engineer license for each state in which you work. The first step in becoming licensed is to take and pass the eight-hour-long NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. Passing this test is one of the most important goals of your life. Take it seriously!

You will easily pass the FE exam if you spend three or four months seriously preparing for it. You might need longer if you have been out of school for a number of years. If you are still in college, then I recommend taking the exam during your senior year. For this case, I would recommend studying 10 to 20 hours per week during the entire summer, then cramming for four weeks right before the exam.

The types of questions on the exam are no mystery. To be successful, you need only six things: (1) Michael R. Lindeburg's FE review manual (FE Review Manual: Rapid Preparation for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam); (2) Lindeburg's discipline-specific review book (e.g., mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical); (3) the NCEES FE Supplied-Reference Manual; (4) a freshman calculus book; (5) a state licensing board approved calculator (sorry, you cannot use your fancy calculator); (6) FE sample examinations (FE/EIT Sample Examinations, 2nd Edition).

You should obtain and use a real copy of the NCEES FE-Supplied Reference Manual throughout your entire exam preparation. (I recommend using the real book, not some download that you have printed out.) You cannot take your own reference manual into the exam; a clean reference manual will be provided to you on exam day. The exam is deliberately designed so the examinee is under extreme time pressure. For example, in the (four hour) morning portion of the exam, you have (on average) just two minutes to answer each question. Without preparation, you might be able to figure out the answers to the questions, but if it takes you five to ten minutes per question (instead of two minutes), then you are likely to fail the exam. You need to be so well prepared (by going through the Lindeburg books and practicing with the NCEES FE-Supplied Reference Manual) that you IMMEDIATELY recognize the problem type and you IMMEDIATELY know where to find (and how to use) the equation or constant or conversion factor in the reference book.

Do not be cheap! Considering what you (or your parents) spent on your college education, you would be a fool to (now) skimp on the cost for this book.

Some folks here on Amazon have pointed out that the NCEES FE-Supplied Reference Manual may be purchased on the NCEES website for a lot less. Actually, this is not true: When shipping and handling charges are added, the cost is about the same. Also, some folks have pointed out that you can download a free copy from the NCEES website. This is true. However, I highly recommend that you obtain a copy of the real book. You should practice answering questions and solving problems with the real book each day of your study program, as well as for at least two practice exams. It is also vital that you practice using one of the approved calculators. Good luck!

Double Check NCEES Website as well...

I'll admit that this book is pricey on Amazon, but if you do a simultaneous check with the NCEES website, the price ends up around the same when you factor in shipping. Here's the catch though, though "cheaper" for the book itself, in my experience, the NCEES website has a longer processing time. When I got an FE study guide from them a few months back, it took close to an extra week before I could get the guide. As it happens, the shipping was done as stated within 3-5 business days, but it was the actual processing of the order that was cause for the delay.

My advice, if you need the book ASAP, get it from Amazon, their shipping and order processing is reliable. If you have some time to spare, go through NCEES.org. Also given the nature of the exam, a downloadable copy would be a good overview but you will not have access to a PC for the Exam so getting used to the paperback version seems more logical.

Essential when studying for the FE

I bought this book in preparation for the April 2012 exam and it was invaluable (I passed, woohoo!). The worst thing you can do while taking the FE is waste time by looking though the reference manual hoping to find what you need. Before the test begins, you should know what is information is in the reference manual and, more importantly, where you can find it. I also recommend the Lindeburg review manual; however the key is using this reference guide in order to complete all practice problems in the Lindeburg book. I highly recommend picking up a copy of this manual to anyone studying for the FE exam.

His objective was to locate a unique geologic feature - a huge black knob of ore known as e Ertsberg, first sighted by a small group of Dutch climbers some 24 years before.

In touch with the outside world only be primitive jungle radio and the occasional parachutes delivery of supplies, Forbes Wilson and his party trekked for 17 days across almost inaccessible terrain to an altitude of 12,000 feet, a journey that took the gifted geologist to the limits of human endurance and revealed to him an unforgettable country whose extraordinary landscape, exotic vegetation and simple tribal society he records here in vivid detail. The results of his expedition were exhilarating: measured and sampled, the Ertsberg proved to be the world's largest above-ground outcrop of copper ore.

Wilson's vision and determination brought Freeport back to Indonesia in 1967. A 63-mile access road was carved through the middle of two mountains; the world's largest tramways were built and longest slurry pipeline assembled-in what the trade press called 'Freeport's Mission Impossible' the company succeeded, in five years, in bringing a sophisticated mining operation to the totally isolated Indonesian highlands, and in drawing together the civilizations of the Far East and West.

A phenomenal, and detailed account of the re-discovery, delineation and ultimately the mining of the Ertsberg copper occurrence, Irian Jaya. Originally discovered by Dutch (Shell Oil) explorers during a 1936 geological expedition of the New Guinea highlands, Freeport in 1960 embarked on a very risky and humanly difficult excursion to document and sample the remarkable occurrence.
Ertsberg is situated at an elevation of over 12,000-ft, but is within 60-miles of the Arafura Sea, separating Irian Jaya from the Indonesia archipelago. The terrain from the coast up to the Erstberg (ore mountain) is almost impenetrably rugged, heavily vegetated by rain-forest and impossible steep. Above and fringing Ertsberg is the Carstenz Top, the only year-round glacier situated so close to the Equator, at 4-degrees south.
This documentary covers the historical background, indigenous peoples, human and corporate efforts to bring Ertsberg to commercial production. The protecting and documenting of the numerous tribes of indigenous peoples largely not before known was and remains a big focus of the effort.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys hiking, camping, discovery and stories of human phyiscal hardship. Much like "The Endurance" about Shakleton and his crew, this book tracks the events of the re-discoverers of Ertsberg.

I would have to say that this is just about the best cross between a full Bible and a kids Bible ...

Though not an abridged version, this Bible does have quite few full-page color illustrations that helps to keep a child's interest. I would have to say that this is just about the best cross between a full Bible and a kids Bible I've found.

ESV for children

The print is a wee bit small.... otherwise it seems nice.
I don't think the words of Christ were in red. Correct me if I'm wrong.
But the red and white hard-covered Children's ESV Bible has larger print, and the words of Christ are in red.
Not sure which has better notes-- i gave it away to a Sunday School child. The red and white ones my kids used had a list of the books and chapters in the back so they could check the little box when they finished the chapter.
ESV is very accurate and reliable, though no version is absolutely perfect. It is not difficult, but children might need a little help with it at times. Sometimes we use the old Good News TEV Bibles just to hear things more simply.
ESV is usually good for memorizing, though, like the KING James and the RSV. May God's word be always read and honored! And let the little children come to Jesus by hearing it and reading for themselves!
I'd buy this again if the children have good eyesight, and the price is good.

Branislav M. Notaroš is Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Colorado State University, where he conducts research in computational electromagnetics, antennas, and microwaves. He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, where he then served as Assistant Professor. He also was Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He has published three workbooks and 80 papers. Prof. Notaroš was the recipient of the 2005 IEEE MTT-S Microwave Prize, 1999 IEE Marconi Premium, 1999 URSI Young Scientist Award, 2005 UMass Dartmouth Scholar of the Year Award, 2004 UMD COE Dean's Recognition Award, and 2009 CSU Excellence in Teaching Award.

About the Author

Branislav M. NotaroÅ¡ received the Dipl.Ing. (B.Sc.), M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in 1988, 1992, and 1995, respectively. From 1996 to 1998, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Belgrade, and before that, from 1989 to 1996, a Teaching and Research Assistant (faculty position) in the same department.  He spent the 1998-1999 academic year as a Research Associate at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He was an Assistant Professor, from 1999 to 2004, and Associate Professor (with Tenure), from 2004 to 2006, in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He is currently an Associate Professor (with Tenure) of electrical and computer engineering at Colorado State University.

 

Research activities of Prof. NotaroÅ¡ are in applied computational electromagnetics, antennas, and microwaves. His research publications so far include 22 journal papers, 58 conference papers and abstracts, and a chapter in a monograph. His main contributions are in higher order computational electromagnetic techniques based on the method of moments, finite element method, physical optics, domain decomposition method, and hybrid methods as applied to modeling and design of antennas and microwave circuits and devices for wireless technology. He has produced several Ph.D. and M.S. graduates. Prof. NotaroÅ¡’ teaching activities are in theoretical, computational, and applied electromagnetics. He is the author of the Electromagnetics Concept Inventory (EMCI), an assessment tool for electromagnetic fields and waves. He has published 3 workbooks in electromagnetics and in fundamentals of electrical engineering (basic circuits and fields). He has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in electromagnetic theory, antennas and propagation, computational electromagnetics, fundamentals of electrical engineering, electromagnetic compatibility, and signal integrity. He has been consistently extremely highly rated by his students in all courses, and most notably in undergraduate electromagnetics courses (even though undergraduates generally find these mandatory courses quite difficult and challenging).

 

Dr. NotaroÅ¡ was the recipient of the 2005 IEEE MTT-S Microwave Prize, Microwave Theory and Techniques Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (best-paper award for IEEE Transactions on MTT), 1999 IEE Marconi Premium, Institution of Electrical Engineers, London, UK (best-paper award for IEE Proceedings on Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation), 1999 URSI Young Scientist Award, International Union of Radio Science, Toronto, Canada, 2005 UMD Scholar of the Year Award, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 2004 Dean’s Recognition Award, College of Engineering, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 2009 and 2010 ECE Excellence in Teaching Awards (by nominations and votes of ECE students), Colorado State University, and 2010 George T. Abell Outstanding Teaching and Service Faculty Award, College of Engineering, Colorado State University.

One of the best EM textbooks ever written for a complete and in depth electromagnetic education

I am writing a book review for the first time in my life, and the reason I am doing this is not that the author was my former advisor but rather because this is a really great textbook and I believe more instructors/students should use it.

Let me briefly mention my experience with EM books. When I was an undergraduate student at Bilkent, we used D. K. Cheng's book. It was a great book for sure, everything was well explained, there were so many examples but, frankly, with all the proof and derivation requiring problems, it was a difficult book for a junior student. After studying other great EM books written by Balanis and Pozar, I had the unique chance to work with Prof. Notaros during my graduate study. In the following years, first as a PhD student, then as a post doc, and finally as a professor of electrical engineering, I had a chance to examine almost all the EM textbooks (Hayt & Buck, Stratton, Inan & Inan, Jackson, Griffiths, Sadiku, Kraus, etc.) and I can safely say that Notaros' book is one of the best EM textbooks ever written for a complete and in depth EM education.

To me, here are the pros and cons.
pros:
- in depth analysis
- detailed explanations
- step by step derivations
- problems requiring creativity and thinking
- lots of examples
- visualization improvement via Matlab exercises
- biographies of scientists and engineers, who shaped electromagnetics, stimulate intellectual curiosity
(Last three items are main differences between Notaros and Cheng's books)

cons:
- some examples are difficult for an undergraduate student
- there are so many referrals which make it difficult to follow sometimes (e.g. a problem in chapter 8 might refer to one of the solved examples from the same chapter, which depends on the result of another example in chapter 6 that uses a figure from chapter 3)
- (for an instructor) it is almost impossible to finish the whole book in 2 semesters
- lacks pictures of the modern EM tools and devices (students like them)

I should also compare this book to the most commonly used EM textbook at US universities: Ulaby's book. Students love it due to its light content. It provides fancy pictures and explanations of many electromagnetic (EM) tools and devices but we have to accept that it is weak from the theoretical point of view. It lacks coherent derivations and it is really difficult for a student to gain intuitive understanding of most of the fundamental concepts of electromagnetics using Ulaby's book only. Notaros', Cheng's, or Hayt & Buck's EM books provide much deeper electromagnetics.

Overall, I strongly recommend this book for the instructors, who would like to have a complete reference, and students, who would like to specialize in electromagnetics.

A must have for EE students

I have to say, as a senior EE student this book is amazing. There are so many examples and references in this book that it is almost impossible not to be able to do every problem that it asks. It teaches you using a geometrical approach that is not common in most other physics and electromagnetics books. I find that the approach is much easier to learn and leads to a better understanding of how the different equations in electromagnetics change according to the situations that are presented. I would highly recommend this book to any student/professors/enthusiasts who want to either expand their understanding of this subject or an awesome reference book.

Extremely Thorough and Precise Book

This book is a completely new way of looking at the field of Electromagnetics. There is a much higher emphasis on theory and conceptual understanding on a geometric level rather than a barrage of equations (although don't get me wrong, there are plenty of equations to be found here).

While this book is very difficult, yes, and the problems are a challenge, they're extremely well crafted and illuminating, and there are a lot of them! Dr. Notaros has spent a lot of time creating a series of problem questions, conceptual questions, and even hundreds of MATLAB questions complete with tutorials. This is definitely a labor of love, which is especially clear if you have actually had him as a teacher.

My only complaints are sometimes this book is TOO much, it's small but very very dense and you find yourself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information on each page. Also it's a little annoying when you have to flip back to a figure in the first chapter to solve a problem in the 6th chapter, there's a lot of back reference, which can get old.

Electromagnetics is not an easy field to comprehend, I can only claim to understand a fraction of it, but this book certainly does a great job of making it more engaging and intuitive, particularly with its wealth of figures and examples.

Great Survey of the Calculus

Priestley's work is a gem in that it incorporates the full-orbed liberal arts approach to the calculus. Professor Priestley places the differential and integral calculus in the context of history (the best methodology for teaching any aspect of mathematics). You will also find a good number of brain-expanding exercises and real world applications strategically placed in the text. This book is a "must-have" text for any teacher of mathematics and for a student who desires to understand the calculus in the context of history, science, philosophy, and literature. This is education at its best!

Conceptual introduction to calculus.

I have worked through the book myself and can report that I have not come away with any of the negative impressions reviewer Blasjo is talking about. In any case, the rigorous development of calculus has been an evolutionary process with the big ideas having come first, and the logical support developed later. And any serious student of calculus will agree that new concepts and subtleties have to be mastered in the course of study, usually starting with incomprehension gradually giving way to illumination.

This book is unique in the way it presents the *concepts* of calculus and ties it with the historical development of the subject. The exercises should be worked on thoughtfully and even when right answers are obtained some time should be allotted to thinking why the solution works and what is it in the structure of the problem that makes the solution right. Maths is hard work and this books give excellent direction to the effort expected of the student.

And I do not see why advanced topics should be left out of the book purposely. One needs to realise that if we waited for full understanding of any subject before we can start using it, then we will have to wait forever. I believe a lot of cutting-edge mathematics research tries to answer the seemingly elementary question "What is a number?". Surely, we all have a functional understanding that is good enough to master the maths at our individual levels, although the concept of a number can get tricky when thought about very fundamentally. And we are conscious that a deeper understanding is possible if more time is invested, but we accept as adequate the present understanding as long as it is coherent with the maths the student knows thus far. Seen this way, I have no problems with analysis level material kept out of the book, the same way full blown Shakespeare's works are kept out Grade 1 textbooks.

This book has a lot of value to deliver to the intelligent student not trained in mathematics, but with an aptitude for it.

Why another text on solid state devices? The author is aware of at least 14 undergraduate texts published on the subject during the past decade. Although several motivating factors could be cited, a very significant factor was the desire to write a book for the next millennium (a Book 2000 so to speak) that successfully incorporates computer-assisted learning. In a recent survey, members of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University listed integration of the computer into the learning process as the number one priority. Nationally, university consortiums have been formed which emphasize computer-assisted learning. In January 1992, distribution began of the Student Edition of MATLAB, essentially a copy of the original MATLAB manual bundled with a low-cost version of the math-tools software. Over 37,000 copies of the book/software were sold in the first year! Texts and books on a variety of topics from several publishers are now available that make specific use of the MATLAB software. The direction is clear as we proceed into the second millennium: Computer assisted learning will become more and more prevalent. In dealing with solid state devices, the computer allows one to address more realistic problems, to more readily experiment with "what-if" scenarios, and to conveniently obtain a graphical output. An entire device characteristic can often be computer generated with less time and effort than a small set of manually calculated single-point values.

It should be clarified that the present text is not a totally new entry in the field, but is derived in part from Volumes I­IV of the Addison-Wesley Modular Series on Solid State Devices. Lest there be a misunderstanding, the latest versions of the volumes in the Modular Series were not simply glued together. To the contrary, more than half of the material coverage in the four volumes was completely rewritten. Moreover, several supplemental sections and two additional chapters were added to the Volumes I­IV outline. The new text also contains computer-based text exercises and end-of-chapter problems, plus a number of other special features that are fully described in the General Introduction.

In just about any engineering endeavor there are tradeoffs. Device design is replete with tradeoffs. Tradeoffs also enter into the design of a book. For example, a few topics can be covered in detail (depth) or lesser coverage can be given to several topics (breadth). Similarly one can emphasize the understanding of concepts or optimize the transmission of factual information. Volumes I­IV in the Modular Series are known for their pedantic depth of coverage emphasizing concepts. While retaining the same basic depth of coverage, four "read-only" chapters have been specifically added herein to broaden the coverage and enhance the transmission of factual information. In the read-only chapters the emphasis is more on describing the exciting world of modern-day devices. Compound semiconductor devices likewise receive increased coverage throughout the text. There is also a natural tradeoff between the effort devoted to developing qualitative insight and the implementation of a quantitative analysis. Careful attention has been given to avoid slighting the development of "intuition" in light of the greatly enhanced quantitative capabilities arising from the integrated use of the computer. Lastly, we have not attempted to be all-inclusive in the depth and breadth of coverage­­many things are left for later (another course, other books). Hopefully, the proper tradeoffs have been achieved whereby the reader is reasonably knowledgeable about the subject matter and acceptably equipped to perform device analyses after completing the text.

The present text is intended for undergraduate juniors or seniors who have had at least an introductory exposure to electric field theory. Chapters are grouped into three major divisions or "parts", with Part II being further subdivided into IIA and IIB. With some deletions, the material in each of the three parts is covered during a five-week segment of a one-semester, three-credit-hour, junior-senior course in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. A day-by-day course outline is supplied on the Instructor's Disk accompanying the Solutions Manual. If necessary to meet time constraints, read-only Chapters 4, 9, 13, and 19 could be deleted from the lecture schedule. (An instructor might preferably assign the chapters as independent readings and reward compliant students by including extra-credit examination questions covering the material.) Standard Chapters 12, 14, and 15, except for the general field-effect introduction in Section 15.1, may also be omitted with little or no loss in continuity.

Although a complete listing of special features is given in the General Introduction, instructors should take special note of the Problem Information Tables inserted prior to the end-of-chapter problems. These tables should prove useful in assigning problems and in dealing with homework graders. When faced with constructing a test, instructors may also be interested in examining the Review Problem Sets found in the mini-chapters (identified by thumb tabs) at the end of the three book parts. The Review Problem Sets are derived from old "open-book" and "closed-book" tests. Concerning the computer-based exercises and problems, the use of either the student or professional version of MATLAB is recommended but not required. The in-text exercise solutions and the problem answers supplied to the instructor, however, do make use of MATLAB. Although it would be helpful, the user need not be familiar with the MATLAB program at the beginning of the book. The MATLAB problems in successive chapters make increasingly sophisticated use of the program. In other words, the early exercises and homework problems provide a learning MATLAB by using MATLAB experience. It is critical, however, that the user complete a large percentage of the computer-based exercises and problems in the first three chapters. The exercises and problems found in later chapters not only assume a reasonably competent use of MATLAB, but also build upon the programs developed in the earlier chapters.

The best textbook I have seen

Pierret explains the fun details of device physics in a way that makes sense. Discussion on a certain device (PN diode, BJT, MOSFET) usually starts with holes and electrons moving around and basic equations are slowly built. Deviations from the ideal are then discussed as well as methods to minimize those deviations.
After reading this textbook, I feel pretty confident about my understanding of device physics. Although I am still an undergraduate and probably shouldn't think of myself as a hotshot since this book is very basic, Pierret really explained the material well and I feel good about what I learned from this book.
No other textbook in any subject comes close to the clarity that this textbook provides. Math textbooks never give enough examples, physics textbooks never seem to be in enough detail, CS textbooks either overload you with theory that's not well explained or excessive examples that beat around the bush. However, this textbook provides just enough examples to clarify crucial subtleties, starts from the basics of holes and electrons moving around, and slowly builds on the basics to explain more advanced topics. It just makes sense if you read it.
Of course no textbook is perfect and not everything will make sense the first time you read it. Sometimes something will not make sense in a textbook and no matter how many times you reread it, no matter how many times you bang your head against the table, and no matter how many weeks go by, it still will not make sense. But this textbook is different. Pierret provides a good foundation of device physics so after the concepts bounce around in your head for a few weeks, everything will make sense.
What's also really great about this textbook is that all you need to know before you read this textbook is F=ma, a bit of electrostatics, some basic calculus, and common sense. This intro book really is an intro book.

The Best Text for Introductory Semiconductor Devices

Robert Pierret has, arguably, written the best introductory textbook for learning about semiconductor devices. His book grinds out and explains many of the details that a first-timer should learn. In a sense, he holds your hand through the material and does a very good job of it.

Things I liked a lot:
1) Coverage of the basic physics and equations that model carrier statistics and transport. Use of the equations of state in several different scenarios.
2) Explanation of carrier flow in a p-n junction.
3) Derivation of BJT current equations.

7) Creative end-of-chapter problems (but no solutions!)

Things that should be added:
1) List of equations and material properties in localized areas (this is a biggie, but you can always find them online and make your own!)
2) Better explanation of BJT operation.
3) Discussion of interesting devices (not that MOSFETs and BJTs aren't!).
4) More about processing and fabrication

This is perfect for an introductory book for undergraduates. For more advanced readings, I would consult Streetman or Sze. Streetman addresses the lacking elements of this text. Streetman also has a guided learning section at the end of each chapter with answers to conceptual problems. Pierret, instead, has mostly worked calculation problems scattered throughout the chapters.

A gem about FUNDAMENTALS

This textbook is excellent, it is the basic, number one point of starting the journey into the device world. Clear, concise, written as it shuold be done.

To someone this book will seem to be very simple, not enough details coverd and not many devices like SET or SOI.

To other people this textbook will seem to be extremely difficult, impossible to read, confusing, full of theories that cannot be understood. Somebody even wrote here that you will need a PhD in order to read and learn from this book.

Well, if a PhD is needed for reading this book then we humans probably are less intelligent than a cockroach and the term SEMICONDUCTORS would be used maybe for unknown powerful GODS with unimaginable powers that to us, humans, would never be revealed.(and don't even think to ever understand MOSFETs or BJTs, since they are strange magical structures created by GODS, full of obscure mysteries)

I have no words guys, where the hell we can find things done more simply than this.

When someone see that it dates back to 1996, probably it will say , why the hell i'm going to buy an old book from the "past millenium". Its true, after 13 years or relentless progress, in 2009 semiconductor devices have entered in the nanoelectronics era and maybe a more recent texbook is the right choice. Rest assured that in 13 years many changes occurred, but what remains unchanged are the FUNDAMENTALS. This is a book about FUNDAMENTALS, and they will be with us forever. Progress is visible in applications, or better technologies and better understanding of the fundamentals. Fundamental Principles remain the same.
Quantum Mechanics is more than a century old science, but this does not mean that its too old now to be used in the "modern era" of computers, ipod or such other devices. What are we experiencing today is the vital applications of the quantum theories of a century ago. Nothing will change even in the future about Energy Bands, Solid state devices in 2050 will still be explained using energy bands. The Bloch theory on Energy Bands will remain the same, energy quantization is the same as it was experinced by Planck a century ago and so will remain. Maybe 200 years from now we will use light instead of electrons and photonics will become prevalent over electronics, but the fundamentals, such as diffraction will be with us forever.
So think again if you consider this book too old.

Excellent writing style, efficent text layout, and the most important it stresses on energy bands of devices. There is no way to fully understand solid state structures if you cannot draw energy bands.
Excellent text overall, only that it costs a lot, too expensive, more affordable prices are needed for fundamentals books like this

The verses are illustrated by an assortment of talented artists, including Chris Wormell, Chris Riddell, Babette Cole, and Tony Ross. Quentin Blake's signature line drawings introduce each thematic section. Playful lines like Veruca Salt, the little brute,/Has just gone down the rubbish chute (Concerning Veruca Salt) and We may see a Creature with forty-nine heads/Who lives in the desolate snow,/And whenever he catches a cold (which he dreads)/He has forty-nine noses to blow (There's No Knowing What We Shall See) are irresistible. Unfortunately, no biographical information is provided for the illustrators. An index lists the titles of the poems under their sources along with their page numbers but no index of first lines is included. Gr. 5-8. The title is well chosen, and Dahl's particularly viperish, not to say ghoulish, rhymes are full of ill-humor and occasionally delicious nasties. A few of these have never been published before, but most are familiar, made new by a gaggle of well-known illustrators (Lane Smith, Babette Cole, Satoshi Kitamura, William Joyce). The foreword and the images that introduce each section are by the delicious Quentin Blake, and they are very funny. This is a hard collection to take all at once: Augustus Gloop and Veruca Salt get what they deserve, to be sure, but Dahl is vitriolic about Goldilocks. The tone of the witches ("Down Vith Children!") is a little scary, and the sinister sibilance of the Grobes matches what may happen. There's a fair amount of potty humor--but that's typical Dahl. Like the recent D Is for Dahl by Wendy Cooling (2005), this is another way to repackage Dahl. GraceAnne DeCandido

VILE VERSES

AN excellent book... for children with imagination and creative minds. For children above 5 years old I think, Although I read it to my 4 year old niece.
It mesmerizes children. I loved it as a child myself. It is a classic.

I love Vile Verses!!!!!!

I chose this rating of five stars because I love this book!!!
I loved this book so much because in part 3 unlikely creatures there is a short story titled "The Grobes" and my last name is Grobe.
I have recommended it and showed it to just about everyone I know... and I know alot of people!!!!!
thank you google search... if not for me searching ingoogle I never would have discovered this wonderful story in the fantastic book!!!!!!

Roald Dahl is certainly a premier storyteller, but who knew how much rhyme he used consistantly in his writing? The multiple artists that showcase his work in the great book enhance an already enhanced writer. These are fun to share in the classroom!
