Couldn't even finish....
By miss. readoholic
I don't know the author or if she has other books, this was the first one of hers that I tried. I got the sample and was interested enough after reading that to purchase the book. Big mistake! I liked the concept and was hoping it was similar to Samantha Young's series The Fire Spirits, which is also about Djinn. I didn't even make it half way through without wanting to throw it against the wall.

Kyra and her dad have always moved around and been on the run from a mysterious group of people. Her dad has kept silent about her past, her mother, and this group of people so ends up seriously surprised when this group of teenagers come and when fighting ensues they have special abilities. Needless to say they take Kyra and leave her dad beaten pretty bad. During the course of her abduction she tries to escape a few times but to no avail. At this point in the book I was liking Kyra, she seemed capable, smart, and scrappy. I liked that she didn't just give up without a fight.

When they finally get her to the compound she is introduced to two people who claim to be her real parents, claiming her dad kidnapped her as a young child. She of course does not believe this and tells them so. The first night she makes an attempt to escape only to be thwarted by Will, the man assigned to guard her and the one who abducted her from her home to bring her to this compound. He shows her a picture of her as a baby in the arms of the woman claiming to be her mom. The same picture that she has had on her nightstand growing up, the only link to her mother she has ever had. Only in her picture there was no face attached to the body holding her. This is enough, this one picture shown to her by the man who for all she know abducted her, to believe Will and her bio parents that everything is as they say and that her father, the man who raised her and showed her unconditional love must have been lying to her the whole time and that she should condemn him.

I'm sorry but how would one picture change your mind? Especially about the only parent you have ever known. I would never take the word of strangers over my dad. It was just to unbelievable. She seemed so gullible and pathetic. Obviously something happened and people might not be who they say they are but her quick reaction to this flimsy evidence just upset me. I tried to push my way through hoping that it got better but when she tries to get to know her "real" parents better there was something obviously off with them. the father wasn't happy about her being there and the mother was just weird. I get the author wanting to lead the reader down this path of showing not all is how it seems, maybe by dropping bread crumbs along the way, but she just threw it in your face that something was wrong. There was no subtlety here.

So first lets condemn your father, and second when your bio parents are acting strange and unhappy to see you after having lost you for all those years and you still believe them, then I have to say you are just an idiot. Not only that but after what 24 hours with Will, she likes him and trusts him. Smart choice, the boy might be cute but he just kidnapped you, beat up your dad, is guarding you from leaving this compound but sure he showed you kindness so it makes sense to instantly trust him right?

I had to stop at that point.

Maybe it gets better in time but I doubt it. I say save your money and buy something else...

Very original plot!
By Saleana (Triquetra Reviews)
First a quick thanks to the author for giving me a copy of the book when I won a giveaway! I love winning books and this was a great prize!

Cover! I think this cover is really awesome. The colors are great and it gives an air of mystery, but once you read the story it all comes together.

I went through emotions in this book just like Kyra did. At first everything was happy and then - BOOM - your life turns upside down. I went up and down with her and I was confused during part of the book -wondering where these plot turns were going to go. However, things progress nicely and I enjoyed how time moved pretty quickly. If something wasn't important then we didn't hear about it, which is how I like my books to go. If there's a three week period and only one event goes on then I don't need to hear about all three weeks, which is something that Laura Catherine does nicely.

I admit that I was shocked that the ending was the ending. I went to turn the book and...nothing. I was pretty sad that it ended! Remember how I said that there were ups and downs? Make sure to grab some tissues towards the ending, you're going to need them.

If you guys like romance (you have to if you're here right?) then you'll be in for a treat. At one point it looks like not a love triangle, but a rectangle...although not really? You'll just have to read this to understand.

I loved all the mythology that was in the book. I've never really looked in the Djinn so it was really interesting to look at something that isn't as popular as say, vampires are. Very original content and I was super pleased! Book two next?!?

Very different from typical YA books
By The Eclectic Bookworm
Very different from the normal "vampire and werewolves" fare. That is why I was drawn to this book. I recently read the Forbidden Trilogy by Karpov Kinrade(I may do a post on it soon), and this kind of reminds me of that series mixed in with one I love, but have yet to finish, called The Significance Series by Shelly Crane.

Kyra is a very strong character. Very strong-willed, smart, resourceful. She analyzes her situation and tries not to get too emotional.

I don't want to give any of the twists and turns away at all, but this is probably one of the least predictable YA novels I have ever read. You think you know where it's going and WHAM! a new twist. That is probably why I was up until 3 a.m. last night finishing this book. Characters aren't stereotypical, events aren't what they seem. Very refreshing in this genre.

I found myself wishing this book was longer. I wanted to know more about the Blooders, the history of the djinn and their wars. I guess if this is going to be a trilogy, there is more to come.

I also like the social commentary. Most of the time I try to ignore that, but the commentary in this book was written in such a way that it wasn't preachy, it wasn't political. It was just part of the story and events weren't contrived to get the point across. It was woven more naturally into the story.

This is strictly YA fare as well, I would be comfortable recommending it to a younger teen. I wish books like these were written when I was younger!!!

Looking forward to the next few books...

4 out of 5
By Mimerki
First off, Eisner does a great job of combining visual elements with his text in this book. The whole thing is illustrated with cavemen working on their storytelling technique, and I have to admit that the cavemen illustrations were great fun and always helped to clarify the how side of what he was saying in the text. Beautifully done. (Yes, I know, this is like saying, "Hey, y'know that Hemingway guy? Some of his stories were really good.")

Does it have any issues? Yes. It's 164 heavily illustrated pages. You can read it in an afternoon. And some of the illustrative pieces feel over-long for the point they are trying to prove. I hit the point on a couple of them where I found myself saying, "Yes, I get it. We needed the X in the beginning so we would understand Y now. Can we move on?" I also felt that, at 164 pages, he didn't really have the opportunity to go into depth on some areas. There's a point where he provided two bad examples of a comic script... and no good example. Aaaaah!

Even with those issues in mind, I have to give the book 4 caped crime-fighters out of five. It's well-written (though there are also some grammatical gaffs that make me want to scream), it's engaging, and it's instructive. Worth the read.

Useful tips for the beginner artists
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:31057701]]Telling a good story is an incredibly difficult. In this book, Will Eisner shares with readers some of things to be aware of when tackling storytelling using comics.

He talks about techniques to use to help build a more convincing story. This would include comic tools like lettering, building momentum, using visual clues and writing. Examples include how props (i.e. guns) are held to reveal human characteristics.

There are lessons on how to engage readers, how readers think and mistakes to avoid. These are followed with lots of comic strip examples -- including a selection from different comic artists. Unfortunately, they aren't captioned page by page like it was done on his other books. The comic examples are great, you know it but you don't know why they work.

The book doesn't really go in depth into all aspects of storytelling. There's no talk on character development, story arcs, conflict management and specific story elements and tools.

Overall, this is still a very useful book for anyone who's just starting out and thinking of drawing their own comics.

James Baldwin : Collected Essays : Notes of a Native Son / Nobody Knows My Name / The Fire Next Time / No Name in the Street / The Devil Fi

Novelist, essayist, and public intellectual, James Baldwin was one of the most brilliant and provocative literary figures of the postwar era, and one of the greatest African-American writers of this century. A self-described "transatlantic commuter" who spent much of his life in France, Baldwin joined cosmopolitan sophistication with a fierce engagement in social issues. Edited by Nobel laureate Toni Morrison, the Library of America's Collected Essays—the most comprehensive gathering of Baldwin's nonfiction ever published—confirms him as a uniquely prophetic voice in American letters.

With burning passion and jabbing, epigrammatic wit, Baldwin fearlessly articulated issues of race and democracy and American identity in such famous essays as "The Harlem Ghetto," "Everybody's Protest Novel," "Many Thousands Gone," and "Stranger in the Village." Here are the complete texts of his early landmark collections, Notes of a Native Son (1955) and Nobody Knows My Name (1961), which established him as an essential intellectual voice of his time, fusing in unique fashion the personal, the literary, and the political. "One writes," he stated, "out of one thing only—one's own experience. Everything depends on how relentlessly one forces from this experience the last drop, sweet or bitter, it can possibly give." With singular eloquence and unblinking sharpness of observation he lived up to his credo: "I want to be an honest man and a good writer."

The classic The Fire Next Time (1963), perhaps the most influential of his writings, is his most penetrating analysis of America's racial divide and an impassioned call to "end the racial nightmare...and change the history of the world." The later volumes No Name in the Street (1972) and The Devil Finds Work (1976) chart his continuing response to the social and political turbulence of his era and include his remarkable works of film criticism. A further 36 essays—nine of them previously uncollected—include some of Baldwin's earliest published writings, as well as revealing later insights into the language of Shakespeare, the poetry of Langston Hughes, and the music of Earl Hines.

Writer James Baldwin earnestly championed the civil rights movement in both his fiction and nonfiction, a fact which, coupled with his extraordinary writing talent, assured not only his historical importance, but also his place as one of the finest African American writers of his generation. Collected Essays is a comprehensive collection of his most memorable prose, including "Stranger in the Village," "The Harlem Ghetto," and "Many Thousands Gone." Clear in voice and vision, the essays communicate the emotions of an entire historical movement. Combining politics, prophecy, and passion, Baldwin's essays are truly as thought-provoking today as they were some 30 years ago.

From Publishers Weekly
Baldwin's impassioned essays have been at least as influential as his novels in exposing the racial polarization of American society. This massive compilation reproduces in their entirety his early essay collections?Notes of a Native Son (1955), Nobody Knows My Name (1961), The Fire Next Time (1963)?as well as his later, less successful book-length essays?the pessimistic, doom-laden No Name in the Street (1972) and The Devil Finds Work (1976), a semi-autobiographical gloss on American movies. The book charts his trajectory from eloquent voice of the civil rights movement to disillusioned expatriate increasingly prone to grandiloquence and angry rhetoric. Also included is a miscellany of 36 articles, polemics and reviews, 26 of which were previously collected in The Price of the Ticket (1985), published just two years before Baldwin's death from cancer in France at age 63. Novelist Morrison's editing of this omnibus, which includes a chronology and notes, should help rekindle interest in Baldwin, whose recurrent themes?the African American search for identity, the hypocrisy of white America, the urgent necessity for love?make his work timely and challenging. From Library Journal
Early Novels and Stories features the complete text of Baldwin's novels Go Tell It On the Mountain, Giovanni's Room, Another Country, and his short story collection Going To Meet the Man. Most of Baldwin's writing is autobiographical and deals with his coming of age as a black man in America and later as an expatriate in France, as well as coming to terms with his homosexuality. Written between 1953 and 1965, these stories broke down walls. Collected Essays offers an impressive array of Baldwin's nonfiction and includes nine essays never before collected. Presented here are the complete texts of the collections Notes of a Native Son, Nobody Knows My Name, The Fire Next Time, No Name in the Street, and The Devil Finds Work. Topics range from racism to literature to social issues. Along with corrected texts, these feature scholarly notes, a chronicle of the author's life, and more. Both volumes are essential for all collections.

Underappreciated Master
By Todd Womble
Baldwin isn't as widely read as he should be, and his views on race, sexuality, and American culture are perhaps even more important today than they were 30-40 years ago.

A great book -- A worthy part of a great series
By A Customer
I love James Baldwin--I think he's a tremendous writer, so Toni Morrison could hardly go wrong in selecting essays for this volume. All of the selections are excellent. Notes of a Native Son contains a touching eulogy for Richard Wright ("Alas, Poor Richard"), explaining the lonliness and problems Mr. Wright had at the end of his life. Baldwin displays his tremendous range as both a political commentator and a literary critic. The Devil Finds Work, in particular, is very insightful--and several parts humourous.
What I don't understand--and why I struck a star off this collection--is why Ms. Morrison did not include "Evidence of Things Unseen," Baldwin's analysis of the Atlanta child murders from the early eighties. Perhaps Library of America is planning later volumes of Baldwin's works--The companion volume to these essays is his "Early Novels," most notably "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Giovani's Room." I can't imagine that Library of America would not produce a volume including Mr. Baldwin's later works--especially "Just Above my Head."
This particular edition is well worth having--despite the price. First, this is a good collection of Baldwin's essays, many of which are difficult to find. Second, the Library of America really does a commendable job in paper quality and binding. This is not a leather bound edition on 50 pound paper, so stiff you can't open it and printed so the back binding looks impressive on your bookshelf--this is tightly bound, cardboard cover that lies flat, and is easy to read. The paper is not heavy--but acid free, and tear resistant. The Library of America series are good collections that are meant to be read many times, by many people--these books hold up very well.
I am afraid that Mr. Baldwin's works and opinions may fall by the wayside as time passes. The fact that Ms. Morrison--one of our best and most respected authors--put these collections together will certainly help keep Mr. Baldwin's works alive. But if you have any interest in what it means to be African American--in the twenties, to contemporary america--through even tomorrow--You need to read and appreciate Mr. Baldwin's insights. And you will also enjoy his clear, careful, and pointed writing.

Architectural Composition, by Rob Krier

'It is my aim to rehabilitate an architecture that has become dishonoured and disgraced.'

Rob Krier is a unique voice in today's architectural discourse through his commitment to developing a relevant and pragmatic theory of architecture based on his own experience and observations of architectural practice and opposed to the easy, abstract theorising so common in contemporary architectural writing. Together with his brother Leon, he has perfected a form of presentation in which the potency of his thinking finds its perfect counterpoint in detailed drawings and sketches which argue his case visually through the power of example. Following the success of his widely acclaimed Urban Space, a work which looked at the problems of our cities from a historical, theoretical and practical standpoint, Krier now applies his particular, highly influential mode of didactic criticism to contemporary architecture in a continuing search for fundamental architectural truths.

Architectural Composition is both a theortetical and visual analysis which clearly illustrates the creative process which informs Krier's vision and praxis. The culmination of a lifetime's thought and experience by one of Europe's most important architectural theorists, it is without doubt a major achievement and will become a standard work of reference for both students and practising architects.

From Publishers Weekly
Something of a maverick in architectural circles, Vienna-based architect Krier ( Urban Space ) finds most modern buildings ugly and banal, yet he looks to Le Corbusier for guiding principles on linking form to function. Rejecting "organic" architecture inspired by Antonio Gaudi, Krier upholds principles of symmetry and geometry; eclectically, he seeks out examples of good design as he moves from a Yugoslavian fishmarket to an ancient Hindu temple. This chunky primer attempts to formulate a set of ground rules for architects and builders, yet when Krier gets to a discussion of proportions, he throws up his hands, exclaiming, "There are no rules . . . only experience can help us"; he then follows up with minutely detailed analyses of proportions in the human face, seashells, Gothic cathedrals and da Vinci's sketches of horses. Lively, very readable, combative, this delightful tome is generously illustrated with hundreds of photographs, sketches and lovingly shaded color drawings that illuminate key points.

From Library Journal
We have come full circle. Seventy-five years ago, at the height of the academic, or Beaux Arts, period in Western architecture, books on architectural composition abounded, spreading the gospel of academic design from Paris to the hinterlands. This book, by an internationally known architect and professor at the Technical University of Vienna, harkens back to this period, parsing its approach into discrete operations and elements based on precedent. The approach is typological rather than holistic or technological, thereby throwing off the yoke of design as a species of problem solving that characterized so much colorless architecture in the mid-20th century. For architectural pedagogy as a primer on design. Peter Kaufman, Sch. of Architecture, Florida A & M Univ., Tallahassee

Krier's treatise covers the lost art of building urban space as few other architecture books currently in print do. Any student hoping to understand the fundamentals of urban design will benefit from this valuable and highly accessible study.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Monuments Men, which is now a major motion picture directed by and starring George Clooney, Rescuing Da Vinci uses 460 photographs to tell the story of the Monuments Men.

The Monuments Men were a group of 345 or so men and women from thirteen nations who comprised the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives section during World War II. Many were museum directors, curators, art historians and educators. Together they worked to protect monuments and other cultural treasures from the destruction of World War II. In the last year of the war, they tracked, located, and ultimately returned more than 5 million artistic and cultural items stolen by Hitler and the Nazis. Their role in preserving cultural treasures was without precedent.

Review
From The Wall Street Journal, Dec 15, 2006: "Mr. Edsel has collected hundreds of photographs documenting the extent of the Nazis' looting and the Allies' efforts to protect or rescue art treasures. We see Goering's private museum of stolen masterpieces, American soldiers recovering Leonardo's "Lady With an Ermine" and Rembrandt's rolled-up "Night Watch" being transported across Holland to safety. Particularly memorable is a photograph of the massive "Winged Victory" sculpture in the Louvre being lowered down the museum steps with ropes and pulleys before to its evacuation in advance of the Nazi invasion. One shudders with gratitude -- for the fact that the piece survived the war and for a book that reminds us of what is at stake when the enemies of civilization seize power." --From The Wall Street Journal, Dec 15, 2006:

From The Chicago Tribune, Dec 3, 2006: "Rescuing Da Vinci by Robert M. Edsel...is a crime story, writ so large it covers a continent. It gathers together, for the first time, nearly 500 photos documenting the Nazi theft of tens of thousands of artworks from European museums and private collections. And it details the immense, painstaking, though little-recognized, efforts of Allied armies to recover and return these precious items." --From The Chicago Tribune, Dec 3, 2006:

Titles aren't everything.
By C. Rawson-Tetley
You could be forgiven for dismissing this book, if you only went by titles, as just another book that is cashing in on the Da Vinci myth in concert with a patriotic nostalgia for the Second World War as a time of moral absolutes. You would be wrong. The photographs are superb, many published for the first time, and the accompanying text is precise, jargon free and direct. Robert Edsel may, as he says, be obsessed with the subject but his approach is measured and clear. I am an English fine art academic and heard of this book via a small article in an English newspaper and was sufficiently intrigued to order the book from Amazon in the US (it is not available in Great Britain). I have recommended it to many of my friends (not something to do lightly) as it compliments and extends, visually, much of the existing literature on the subject of art theft.

Priceless!
By Paula
It's hard to imagine why this EXTRAORDINARY story about EXTRAORDINARY men (and women) is just now being revealed to a mass audience. As a civilization, we owe the salvation of our culture to the efforts of the heroes in "Rescuing Da Vinci." HATS OFF TOO to Mr. Edsel for his vision of putting forth the greatest "untold" story of WWII in a brilliantly assembled book. It is the PERFECT gift for members of the "Greatest Generation," art collectors, war buffs, museum buffs or any thinker. The breathtaking pictures make it a superb gift for photographers, designers, architects and the like. Plus, I've discovered it's a wonderful "conversation piece" for my coffee table!

Art in the ETO
By Christian Schlect
An effective pictorial survey of the cultural crimes waged by Germany during World War II.

That much plundered European art was found, protected and returned to rightful owners by the U.S. military in these difficult days is a bright star in our nation's history. Mr. Edsel has delivered a fitting tribute to the many U.S. and British art experts, and others, who volunteered to do what was possible to make aright the unpardonable cultural crimes committed by the Nazis.
