Get this book. Great collection of sketches and finished work that is worth the price. Many of the themes are traditional japanese motifs but he puts his own twist and style on everything. Gorgeous linework, some unusual inspiring stuff.

Required reference book for the Sonoran Desert

This is not an "edible plants" field guide. It is an in depth review of Arizona, Sonora, and Baja desert plants useful as food and for other purposes. It is useful for building short term survival skills, for adding desert plants to ones diet, and as an ethnologic look at the indigenous population of the Sonoran Desert. It is an excellent book and one I am very happy to own.

Exhaustively researched, accurate, and useful

I divide wild food books into two types: those based on personal experience (or at least that pretend to be), and those based on research of ethnology. Hodgson's book falls into the latter category, and I think it is the best such book ever written, at least for any part of North America. Food Plants of the Sonoran Desert covers hundreds of species--all or virtually all that are known or strongly suspected to be used (or have been used previously) for food in this region. The diversity of plants covered is amazing. Some are discussed with very short entries because little is known about their use, while others receive lengthy treatment (mesquite, acorn, Stenocereus cactus) because they were staple foods and much has been recorded about their use. The book is done in an admirable scholarly fashion - sources are not only cited, but contradicting sources are sometimes quoted in juxtaposition and discussed.

To those who already have wild food field guides, you will be amazed at how many interesting and useful plants you'll find in this book that you might have never heard of. There are probably more species in here than in most field guides intended to cover the whole continent. (This should be a lesson for those unrealistic foragers who think they'll be able to find a field guide covering a whole continent or country (or even half of one) and thoroughly discuss every wild edible. It just can't fit in one book.) Of course, the Sonoran Desert is only a tiny fraction of the US, and this book also covers the Sonoran parts of Mexico, but many of the plants discussed range well outside this bioregion. I live 1,500 miles from the Sonoran desert and only get there about once every two years, but I still find it fascinating to read.

This is a great book for those interested in natural history, plants, ethnobotany, and the Sonoran Desert in particular. For survivalists, it provides sufficient information for the plants to be actually utilized, at least in many cases.

Although the photos are black and white, they are generally good. That said -- this is NOT AN ID GUIDE.

I wish every bioregion had a book like this. But then again, the ethnographic record in the Sonoran is far better than that in many other parts of the continent.

Excellent and Informative

I had been searching for an authoritative, exhaustingly-researched book specific to the ancient food plants of the Sonoran Desert and this is easily the definitive volume.

The book's catalog has three sections: Gymnosperms, Amniosperms: Monocots, and Angiosperms: Dicots, and there are 151 illustrations. Appendices include Plant Species and Parts Used (13 pages), Fruiting Periods of Selected Species Providing Edible Fruit (4 pages), Fruiting Periods of Selected Species Providing Edible Seeds (3 pages), Common Names (Non-English) (7 pages), and Literature Cited (18 pages). A good thorough Index is always helpful and this one includes Common Names in English and many other references for a total of 14 pages.

The amount of writing for each plant varies, likely corresponding with the frequency of its usage as a food source. For example, Sonchus (sow-thistle) gets less than half a page, while Yucca is more thoroughly explored on a full seven pages.

Ms. Hodgson's approach to the subject matter can be seen in her preface, which begins with a quote from Mary Austin: "When I'm out with the Indian women, gathering roots and materials for basket making, it's not that i expect to make baskets or drink their medicine, it's the things you sort of soak up from the earth while you're with them, it's the things that make women wise. I don't know if I can explain -- it's not as if they learned about the willows and the grasses in order to make baskets, but as if they learned to make baskets by knowing willows. I guess men used to learn that way once -- learned to make bows by knowing the junipers, the way the branches bend and spring back. But now they try to do all their learning in their heads." An excellent quote to start an ethnobotanical study of the plants eaten in the Sonoran Desert before modern agriculture sowed the land with species from other places and poured chemicals all over them and the soil to aid in the temporary appearance of artificial adaptation.

In this history of plastic from the mid-19th century to the present, freelance writer Fenichell includes information on the use of plastics in industry (both in peace and war), the arts, popular culture, and fashion. Apparently for the sake of popular appeal, the author provides a chatty rather than analytical treatment, lacking documentation and being generally pro-plastic in tone. He makes some reference to the negative aspects of the industry, but the breezy writing style precludes his dealing with such issues thoroughly. Although his book has some use as a broad overview of the subject, a better choice would be Jeffrey L. Meikle's American Plastic: A Cultural History (Rutgers Univ., 1995). I sell plastic for a living and I still really liked this book

Plastic: The Making of a Synthetic Century was written by Stephen Fenichell in 1996 as a history of the plastics business. It describes the winding path that a wide range of plastics took from the lab to the marketplace. The book is filled with many, many interesting anecdotes about the entrepreneurs who blazed that trail.

The book is organized into 13 chapters arranged, mostly, in chronological order. There is the predictable, "Just one word......Plastics" cliche from The Graduate movie used as a preface. The book begins with a late 20th century scene setting chapter. Mr. Fenichell then rolls the clock back 150 years to explain the commercialization of rubber, which he properly calls "Nature's Plastic".

There are chapters about celluloid, Bakelite, and cellophane with historical vignettes about their respective titans named Eastman, Baekeland and Brandenberger. There is a dramatic account of the tragic life of Wallace Hume Carothers, the inventor of nylon. But my favorite chapter is the one entitled, "Plast-O-Rama" which highlights the ways in which post-war America went bonkers for all things plastic. From Silly Putty and Hula Hoops to Frisbees and Tupperware and Saran Wrap, it's all in this book.

Overall it thought that the Pro's of this book were:

And I thought the only Con of this book was:
The history is presented out of chronological order for no apparent reason

Important history.

This history is probably of more relevance and importance to our modern way of life than just memorizing a list of nineteenth century presidents.

A Fun and Enlightening read

I came across this book by accident,while travelling. The colorful cover caught my eye, but soon after reading a few chapters I was hooked. It's the perfect beach book. Plastic is now a word that can conjure the idea of "cheap" or "fake" but it was not always so. Fenichell starts us at the beginning of the discovery of the various materials like man-made rubber and other things we now take for granted, and tells the story of each innovation as though we are standing there in the lab and the inventor yells "Eureka!" Stories about the inventors range from funny (you know Goodyear is going to eventually succeed because of his famous name, but he has many misadventures before success arrives) to poignant, in the stories where someone desperately wants to achieve fame and fortune but their "plastic" product fails to catch on and their name disappears into oblivion.
My only criticism is the chapter on my grandfather, who plays a prominent role in the history of plastic. Fenichell simplifies and distorts some of the facts about my grandfather's company, but I forgive him in that it makes the reading light and entertaining in the end (well, a couple of chapters get bogged down by technical explanations of certain chemical processes). This is a book for anyone interested in American history, sociology,and pop psychology: plastics of all kinds make up an inextricable part of every aspect of our daily lives.

John Armour is Hogan Lovells Professor of Law and Finance at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of the European Corporate Governance Institute. He has held visiting posts at various institutions including the University of Auckland, the University of Bologna, the University of Chicago, Columbia Law School, the University of Frankfurt, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Private Law, Hamburg, the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and the University of Western Ontario. His research interests lie in the integration of legal and economic analysis, with particular emphasis on the impact on the real economy of changes in company law and financial regulation. He has been involved in policy-related projects commissioned by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry, Financial Services Authority, and Insolvency Service, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and the World Bank. He currently serves as a member of the European Commission's Informal Company Law Expert Group.


Dan Awrey is an Associate Professor of Law and Finance and Academic Director of the MSc in Law and Finance programme at the University of Oxford. His teaching and research interests reside in the area of financial regulation and, more specifically, the regulation of banks, investment funds, derivatives markets, and financial market infrastructure.


Paul Davies is a Senior Research Fellow at Harris Manchester College, Oxford, UK. He was Allen & Overy Profesor of Corporate Law, University of Oxford, from 2009-2014; Cassel Professor of Commercial Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science, 1998-2009; and, before that, Professor of the Law of the Enterprise, University of Oxford.He is a Fellow of the British Academy, an honorary Queen's Counsel and an honorary Bencher of Gray's Inn.


Luca Enriques is the Allen & Overy Professor of Corporate Law at the University of Oxford. His scholarship explores corporate law, corporate governance, securities regulation, and financial regulation. Among his many publications are numerous articles in major European and US reviews and journals, as well as several books. Enriques has held visiting appointments at the University of Cambridge, the Interdisciplinary Center Hertzliya, Harvard Law School, and the Instituto de Impresa (Madrid). He previously taught at LUISS University (Rome) and the University of Bologna and was a Commissioner at the Italian S.E.C. (Consob) between 2007 and 2012.

Jeffrey N. Gordon is the Richard Paul Richman Professor of Law at Columbia Law School and co-director of the Richman Center for Business, Law and Public Policy and the Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership. He is also a visiting professor at Oxford University and a Fellow of the European Corporate Governance Institute. He has written extensively on corporate governance and mergers and acquisitions over his academic career but after events in fall 2008 began teaching and writing on financial regulation. Before becoming a law professor, he worked at the US Treasury and a private law firm in New York City.


Colin Mayer is the Peter Moores Professor of Management Studies at the Said Business School at the University of Oxford. He is a Professorial Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford, and an Honorary Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford and St Anne's College, Oxford. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, the European Corporate Governance Institute, and the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal and the International Advisory Board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India. Colin Mayer was the first professor at the Said Business School in 1994, the Peter Moores Dean of the Business School between 2006 and 2011, and the first Director of the Oxford Financial Research Centre between 1998 and 2005. He was the chairman of Oxera Ltd. between 1986 and 2010 and a member of the UK Government Natural Capital Committee between 2012 and 2015. He is a director of Aurora Energy Research Ltd.

Jennifer Payne is Professor of Corporate Finance Law at the University of Oxford where she teaches courses on company law, corporate finance law, corporate insolvency law, and principles of financial regulation. She has held visiting positions at leading international institutions including the University of Auckland, NUS University of Singapore, the University of Melbourne, and the University of British Columbia. She has written widely in the field of corporate law in leading journals and edited collections, and is the author of several books, including The Oxford Handbook of Financial Regulation (OUP 2015, with Niamh Moloney and Eilis Ferran).
