Hands down one of the best for anyone looking for 2nd level information about Oahu. Not a good first book on Oahu, maybe too expensive, but the information within is hard to find in other sources.

THE FAMED SPIRITUALIST MEDIUM RECOUNTS THE EARLIER HISTORY OF THE MOVEMENT

Emma Hardinge Britten (1823-1899) was a key figure in the Spiritualist Movement, as a writer, orator, and practitioner; she has also written Nineteenth Century Miracles Or Spirits and Their Work in Every Country of the Earth and Autobiography of Emma Hardinge Britten. (NOTE: Page numbers below refer to the 1970 565-page University Books edition.)

She wrote in the Introduction to this 1870 book, "we write for that posterity to whom our facts of veritable history will be of incalculable value, though to us, the living actors therein, they may be of little or no importance. Besides, the memory of these marvels rapidly passes away with the flight of time... Spiritual[ist] journals... have all... been too short-lived to become points of reference to posterity... Obviously, then, a duty rests on some one to collect the best and most reliable evidence that the circumstances of the case will afford, so as to conserve in a compendious form the records of either the commencement of a new era or an episode in human history as unparalleled in its preternatural marvels as it is rife with instruction, abundant in religious, social, and political influence, and prophetic of a mighty and momentous future for mental and spiritual science." (Pg. 16-17)

She states, "Admitting that the modern spiritual manifestations in America first began... at Rochester in 1848 [with the Fox sisters], it would still be impossible to separate the influence which the prevalence of the magnetic idea [of Franz Mesmer] exercised... Between the epochs ... is an interregnum... connecting both, belonging to both, yet standing alone, and unrivalled in the marvellous character of his occult endowments, and the irresistible nature of the influence he has exercised upon humanity. This personage is Andrew Jackson Davis..." (Pg. 23)

She comments, "Thus at Buffalo, New York, three gentlemen, whose position as leaders of science should have deterred them from the commital of their names to a published verdict of which subsequent events should have made them hearily ashamed, gravely rendered their testimony to the effect that the manifestations produced through the Fox sisters were all the result of the snapping of their knee and ankle joints!" (Pg. 92; the text of this document is given on pgs. 153-154)

She observes, "it can be no matter of surprise that persons who profess the broadest license on the marriage question should have accepted the demonstrations of spirit communion as well as those who believed in the strictest views of the conjugal relation, or even advocated the asceticism of celibacy. Still the mere fact that certain individuals professed 'free love' doctrines became convinced of the truth of spirit communion was quite sufficient, when all other causes of offense failed, to give a handle for antagonism to fasten the obnoxious and totally irrelevant opinion upon the entire body of Spiritualists... and labor to make the two words appear to be of synonymous meaning." (Pg. 233)

She admits, "When it is remembered that Spiritualism numbers one-fourth at least of the population of the United States in its ranks, it can be no matter of surprise to find many persons associated with it, whose character and actions are calculated to inflict far more damage on the cause than the most bitter antagonism or secular opposition. Amongst these, none have been so active for mischief as 'spiritual mountebanks' and dishonest mediums." (Pg. 239) Later, she adds, "Ninety-nine spurious counterfeits can never destroy the value of one precious piece, fresh from the treasury of immortality; and that these have been vouchsafed to buy souls from the power of darkness, infidelity, and superstition, we know, and testify of in these startling and wonderful spiritual phenomena." (Pg. 345)

The Most Accessible Introduction to Porter. Period.

I have read two of Porter's books - Competitive Strategy and Competitive Advantage. And I have also, sort of, understood them - even though I haven't really internalized them for implementing in my company. The reason was that I did not quite get my mind around the concepts in a comprehensive manner as the ideas are in different books and they are not presented as an integrated whole (and, of course, I read them at different times). For the first time, in this book, the concepts are presented in a very accessible manner and connected in a very coherent manner. The books starts (Part 1) with What is Competition - elucidating on the concept of Competition, The Five Forces, and the Value Chain (CA). Part 2 addresses What is Strategy - in which the concepts of Creating Value; Trade-offs; Fit; and Continuity are discussed. The book is wrapped up with A Short List of Implications where in the author summarizes the takeaways and what they mean for us.

I am in the midst of developing a strategy for my company. These easy to understand frameworks have been extremely useful. In fact, after reading this book, I decided not to hire a consultant who was charging me an exorbitant sum ($4,000/day!) as I think that this book will be more helpful. I highly recommend this book esp if you are trying to get a good grasp of the concepts of Michael Porter. An absolute gem.

Good summary of Porter's ideas on business-unit strategy

Michael Porter's ideas on strategic management are important. However his books Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors and Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance are very dense (in addition to being 30 years old). This much shorter book is written in a journalistic style and conveys Porter's basic ideas relating to business-unit strategy.

The book serves as a first encounter with Porter's thinking, but I would really urge readers to study Porter's two first books as well. Even though Porter's books are 30+ years old, they are important. Classics have the remarkable feature of being relevant whenever they are read. Naturally, they are not perfect. They do not talk enough about service industries, but that was not really America in the 70s. The current book has the same deficiency; not that much about service industries.

Even if you have good familiarity with Porter I still cautiously recommend the book. It sometimes adds contextual information, small updates on Porter's thinking, and useful metaphors. For those of you who already have a fair amount of experience (important!) I would also recommend Good Strategy Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why It Matters.

The book is a summary of Porter's ideas from a journalist, so do not expect any deep, fundamental analysis. We get a fair share of thoughtless statements. We might be told that unbundling of an offering is good because not all customers value a lot of features. Then a bit later, we are told that bundling is good because it makes things easier for the customer's purchase decision. The author points out several times that we should use numbers when analysing. It would have been good if she heeded her own advice. Further on the negative side, the author treats Porter like God. It is okay to have Porter as a hero, but that does not justify hero worship. Sometimes it would have been nice with a more critical perspective. I am not talking of the mediocre academic who blurts out some standard canned critique of Porter. Since the author had access to Porter, more penetrating questions should have been asked. For instance, what is so good with the activity map when you already have a value chain? Personally, I find the activity map totally useless. Or for instance, when core competences are described in such a narrow fashion so they become a straw man. Most examples are straight out of current HBS case studies (eg Ikea, Zara, Southwest Airlines). You might find this positive or you might find the author a bit lazy in using the same examples.

UPDATE 2013
I have reread the book and I am much less positive today. The key reason is that the book only covers 20% of what I think an educated strategist/consultant/CEO should know about Porter's work. The second reason is that the case examples are mostly 10+ years old. One new company described is Zipcar and the stock market has taken that company on a straight downhill ride from 30 to around 10. Oh well.

With full access to Michael Porter a much better job could have been done as evidenced by the most interesting part of the book, the Q&A with Porter.

The book is still worthwhile reading if you read a lot of book. I rate the book three stars.

A better book covering exactly the same ground is Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works, in which the ex-CEO of P&G gives his description or Porter's theories. That is a four star book in my opinion. However, both books suffer from being verbose, but that sadly is how HBS Press likes their books.

A home run!

I read the whole book over a long weekend. I must say I could not put it down. For those of us who need an overview of a subject before we dive into the Porter books themselves, this is a great read. For those readers just looking for a summary of Porter's books, this works equally as well. I think this book did Michael Porter the biggest favor of all - it allowed non economics or business majors to understand the importance of strategy. It also turned down the spotlight of individual components of a business [i.e. OE and marketing plans] which, albeit important, must nevertheless be aligned with strategy to be successful. I liked it so much I wrote a blog about it to all my clients. Congratulations to the author.

The Rest is Noise, a Companion

Simply put this may be the best survey of 20th Century music I have read. It is lucid, colorful and certainly entertaining. I read Ross in the New Yorker so I was all the more surprised and delighted to find him more expansive and colorful than that which appears in his column. Here he takes time (and space) to introduce and transit one from one section to another, as does Sibelius in my opinion.

Ross disclosed no composer whose name was unfamiliar to me until he got into Ligeti et al. My mind is open but alas my ears are not.

I am not a musician so I cannot comment on his detailed musical analysis of the various pieces in which he explored technical matters; I simply skipped those. I read all else to my great pleasure. He never fails to add to my knowledge and therefor enjoyment of music I listen to.

Highly recommended with one caveat: He gives to short shrift to most 20th century British composers of the pre and immediate post WWII era. Britten may be all fine and good for some, I am not one of those. Ross' virtually passing over RVW is shocking and more than annoying to me.

Still, it is his book. I feel I can comment on what he offers us. I don't feel I can criticize that which he doesn't offer.

My nose grows longer: He passed Elgar as though he never lived. I am not fond of him but he is not to be ignored.

All the rest is noise

I love Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, even Mahler. But anything beyond that, well, to me it has been just noise. However, Alex Ross's book has helped me to listen in a different way. It takes a long time to work through this book because when Ross talks about this or that composer, this or that piece, I have to stop and find the music (usually at my public library) and listen several times to get what Ross is saying, and then I can listen with more insight (insound?). The historical background is fascinating. The political control in music (e.g., Stalin's effect on Russian composers)is an important part of this book. The subtitle highlights Ross's emphasis on how music tells us something about history. I now understand better the physics of sound and the physical effect that music has on the listener. Ross has a list of recommended recordings which I turn to from time to time. I still do not get Messiaen! This books points the reader in many new directions, opens the reader to other options. It's a great read!

A fascinating and well-written guide to what on earth these guys thought they were doing. Cries out for interactivity; if only you could hear excerpts as they were described. Ross' ability to put his subjective experiences of these musics into words gives an inkling, to those of us who like tunes, what else might be listened for when tunes are banished.

A good primer and EA reference

Enterprise Architecture As Strategy is perhaps the most quoted book on the topics. Online forums on the topic quote this as one of the few really good references on the topic; and I agree.

The authors do a great job of introducing and packaging concepts in Enterprise Architecture – operating model, maturity model, core diagrams, IT engagement model – that are referenced by EA practitioners, consultants and academics alike. The case studies based on academic research of over “200 companies” keeps the narrative grounded.

Who is this book for?

• Practicing Enterprise Architects and EA consultants will find the topics and case studies refreshing. It certainly got me reflecting on my employer’s target operating model
• The book speaks to business executives as much as it does to EA practitioners. Executives will also find it a handy reference that can equip them to “govern” IT strategies
• Those looking to get into EA (many IS/Technical Architects, business analysts and process consultants) will find the book a good introduction to EA “big picture” topics; and perhaps an introduction to some consulting jargon

The book is not an EA “cook book” or a “how to” guide. Unfortunately, learning how-to-do-EA will only come with experience and a few grey hair.

Jeanne Ross and her associates Peter Weill and David Robertson started out with a research study back in 1995. Intending to to publish technology infrastructure transformations but instead have put together a great insightful read which describes how to design an enterprise architecture and help drive success in your business. This book described the vision and steps to design a solid transformation and how to mature your IT organization to align with your business goals. With the support of the MIT/Sloan center for information systems research these folks conducted a study covers over 2 dozen brand name firms and over 100 surveys conducted in which they drew body of evidence to build a foundation for execution. It's a recommended read for IT managers, Senior managers, strategists and enterprise architects. If you want your IT organization to work smarter and not harder, read this book and spread the word.

Gives the big picture. But nothing specific.

This is a worthwhile book to read for every IT leaders. It should set the right trajectory of changing the IT operational and business model to deliver the maximum business value.

This book lacks, however, thorough empirical research and has almost no quantifiable data to backup its suppositions. It also lacks details on "how" to achieve the objectives set by the authors. For example, at Optimized Core level, the authors say that different business units should share data and use standardized processes. But what does "shared" data mean? Does it mean to use the same data warehouse? or just have a master OLTP data that is derived across enterprise? They never get to much detail.

This is a book great overview of the Enterprise Architecture with real great insights and suggestions on IT can better deliver value. Just don't expect them to exactly outline how you can do that.

Pros:
1)Well thought out book on the big picture strategic thinking of how IT can better deliver better business value.
2)Stays away from explaining technical conceptual frameworks (no SOA, data warehousing etc) that detracts from the big picture message.

Cons:
1)No technical details on how to build a better IT.
2)No evidence of any empirical research or quantifiable data to backup the suppositions.
