A wiry kind of human spirit

A conundrum: Loren Kleinman has been to the depths. There is, in this book,a well of sorrow so fraught with anguish that no human reading it could escape the long physical pull on heart, on stomach, on soul.

Yet. Yet. It escapes despair. Somehow, when the plunge is deep, when the slide is nearly at the bottom, when the moment of no return should be there, when Kleinman should be saying to us, "Okay, here we suck the gas, slit the vein, give in to the endless sucking hole from which there is no return" - there is a veering off. Not cowardice. Not a flitting butterfly of sticky-goo. Not "and then I woke up." Not even the smiley face of the cover art, really.

If I had to venture a guess, Kleinman presents more a wiry kind of human spirit: it takes so little to let go, but only a little more to hold on. Whatever seeks to destroy you, isn't worthy of the victory. The man, the dope, the world that berates, attacks or just ignores you: You're better than that. She's better than that.

Humans are breakable things. And mendable things. Most times.

No Faking It Here

These economical poems have a deep root structure and many leaves and petals, yet they are by no means nature poems in the traditional sense. What Kleinman has written in this book are 'human nature' poems that deal with all the pain and foibles we species of a lesser form possess. This poet knows how to create emotional tension without milking the poem to death. The beauty here is that life is presented without artifice, and with great amounts of honesty in the face of human troubles. No faking it here. Most highly recommended.

Real as it Gets!

Sometimes her words hug you, and slap your face, and kick you in the gut. Maybe a bit lower too. 1/2 beautiful, 1/4 raw, 1/4 ethereal. 4/4 amazing.

Kleinman excels when she drops a real thing down, painfully low, and then elevates it. Shes masterful at her art. Her plays with language is spectacular and at times surprising - in a good way. Loved it! I need more!

The Objects, The Beds I've Slept In, and First-Date Oysters are standouts for me.

Colvin argues that Portuguese directors have exploited the growing popularity of the Fado and Lisbon's fadistas to dissuade citizens from alien values that promote individual ambitions and the notion of an easy life of poverty in the Capital. As the public image of the Fado evolves, the fadista's role in film becomes more prominentand eventually,the fadista is the protagonist and the Fado, the principal concern of national film. The author exposes the irony that as the social profile of the Lisbon fadista improves with the international fame of singer Amália Rodrigues, Portuguese film perpetuates and validates the outdated characterization of the fadista as a social pariah that Leito de Barros had proposed in the first Portuguese talkie, A Severa (1931).

Interesting academic investigation

Fado was often used and misused in various political and ideological contexts in Portugal. This book explores extensively the legacy of fado films in Portuguese popular culture. The aim is outlining the urban culture and its expressions, as well as the social messages. Interestingly, it draws comparisons between the fado culture and the later graffiti works, both the artistic expressions of marginalized social categories. It also identifies the current genesis of fado imagology in the present-times, particularly through advertising and cultural representations. The argumentation is solid and the references academically proved. An interesting book for scholars interested in the history of mentalities as well as in understanding Portuguese film and urban culture.

Oh this book, and series mind you, is so good!

Oh this book, and series mind you, is so good. Your heart is in your mouth along with Ari’s at the start. Its like she is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Jared is holding all the cards now, after finding the plans to his house in her room, and you are just left waiting to find out how he is going to play it all out. Also goes down as another off my 2016 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – A book with a number in the title.

After a day has nearly passed Ari finds she hasn’t been arrested – yet! She knows she has no right to go after Jared to explain but when her boss threatens her and her sister she knows he’s the only person she can turn to. Jared has been brooding with the information for a while and still doesn’t know what to do – other than to ignore all of Ari’s calls and have her banned from his office building that is. He should have known though that she wouldn’t give up so easily as she manages to trick him into seeing her. Ari can see that he wants nothing to do with her, which almost breaks something inside her, but also knows that he is her only hope. His strong standoffish facade soon fades though the moment he notices the bruises on her neck. To say he sees red and wants to hunt down the man responsible would be putting it mildly. He agrees to help her, keeping up appearances that they are still seeing each other, if she comes clean about everything – which she does to a point – but only when they are in the safety of his apartment. After she has told him everything you are holding your breath along with Ari the moment he starts his little speech – ready, aim, fire. That’s the moment he says that when this is all sorted out he never wants to see her again. Oh how my heart breaks a little along with Ari’s at that moment.

Loved the two of them together at his apartment when Ari finds out he deleted her Avatar from his game. To her its like he wanted to erase her from existence altogether, which is almost as bad as his comment the night before. He might have had a point with the fact that she lied to him from the beginning but you do feel like it was a bit harsh. So I’m glad that he does start to feel a bit bad even when he is trying not to. This then starts them connecting again on something other than the crazy that surrounds them. An activity that gets them all hot and sweaty that only leads to thoughts of other more adventurous ways they used to get hot and sweaty together.

Jared tries to keep his distance from Ari and only talk to her about how they are going to get out of the situation that are in but with the amount of chemistry and sexual tension that’s between them its not long before it all bubbles over the surface. Its like they have been starved for each other for so long that the moment that spark strikes there is no holding them back. Jared definitely turns into a bit more of a demanding lover taking charge the moment they are alone. They are like magnets; they will always be drawn together no matter what situation they find themselves in.

But with her ever unstable boss getting jumpy at every turn things soon take a turn for the worse. Clues about Ari’s fathers last job start coming to light and she and Jared realize that if they figure out what happened back then it might help them now. As long as they are on the same side then there is nothing that they can’t handle. Lets just hope that they are strong enough for what’s to come as there are lives on the line now and not just their own. Another cliff hanger I’m afraid with this one, as with the others in the series, so be prepared for another aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh moment, that will definitely fire you up to want to know what happens in the last instalment.

Do you ever hate that when you have written a review and the computer froze up. Yep that just happened to me. So here I am starting all over.

First off this is the 3rd book in To Tempt a Thief Series and you must read the first 2 books. I loved the first 2 books so I knew I would be reading on in The Billionaire and the Thief Series and I was not sorry that I got to read the 3rd book. And, OF COURSE there was a cliffhanger but, I knew going in to reading this book that there would have to be one especially since I know that this is a 4 book series and with the way the 2nd book ended the 3rd book would have to end the same way. Plus Sylvia Pierce said that there was a CLIFFHANGER ALERT at the beginning of this book. Sylvia does promise we will be rewarded with patience when the 4th book in this series comes out.

Now after all that. I loved To Tempt a Thief #3! Maybe not as much as #2 but, that is okay. I still really enjoyed this book and Jared continues to be that Panty Melting Alpha that I love. And, again Sylvia is correct she did leave me “begging for the ultimate climax”.

I received a copy of To Tempt a Thief #3 as a gift for an honest review and I give this book 4.5 stars. And, I can’t wait to see what happens in Book 4.

Arianne's weakness - 5 stars

This book picks up where the last one left off. After going to apologize to Arianne, Jared found the blueprints for his house and the code for his security system in her bedroom. Now Ari is tying to come up with something to tell Davidson, without getting her sister, herself and Jared killed.

"Arianne’s secret is out, and now her destiny lies in the hands of two men. One controls her life. The other commands her pleasure. Neither is willing to let her go without a fight."

Jared is devastated that Arianne has fooled him to such an extent, but he can’t get her out of his head—or his heart. He is determined to help her protect her sister and take Davidson down after he sees all the bruises he left on Arianne's neck. Did Davidson have something to do with her father's death? Jared thinks he does and now that Davidson has Tasha, things have taken a turn for the worse.

I am sooo ready for the last part of this story, to see how everything plays out. Will Jared lose all of his artwork? Will Ari go to jail? Will Tasha make it out of this alive - and if she does, will she forgive Arianne for all her lies?

A Fascinating Play

The Last Days of Judas Iscariot is a very interesting play about what may have happened following the death of Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus Christ. The first act is expertly written, and the second act, while it starts slow, finishes with a very strong climax between Judas and Jesus.

The play is also very funny, which surprised me. The humor was dark, but it made the play all the more powerful. I recommend this play to anyone who loves contemporary American drama.

Very Interesting play!

I love looking at the other side of the story. This play gives Judas's side of the last days of Jesus's life, but does it in a fun way, a trial in purgatory. If you are terribly religious and are scared to have your perceptions changed move along, but if you are open minded you should check it out.
Bonus it was originally directed by Phillip Seymour Hoffman
