Persian Authorship and Canonicity in Late Mughal Delhi situates the diverse textual projects of ‘Abd al-Qādir “Bīdil” and his students within the context of politically threatened but poetically prestigious Delhi, exploring the writers’ use of the Perso-Arabic and Hindavi literary canons to fashion their authorship. Breaking with the tendency to categorize and characterize Persian literature according to the dynasty in power, this book argues for the indirectness and complexity of the relations between poetics and politics. Among its original contributions is an interpretation of Bīdil’s Sufi adaptation of a Braj-Avadhi tale of utopian Hindu kingship, a novel hypothesis on the historicism of Sirāj al-Din ‘Alī Khān “Ārzū”s oeuvre and a study of how Bindrāban Dās “Khvushgū" entwined the contrasting models of authorship in Bīdil and Ārzū to formulate his voice as a Sufi historian of the Persian poetic tradition.

The first book-length work in English on ‘Abd al-Qādir “Bīdil” and his circle of Persian literati, this is a valuable resource for students and scholars of both South Asian and Iranian studies, as well as Persian literature and Sufism.

Charles Martin is a poet, critic, and translator. His translation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses received the Harold Morton Landon Award from the Academy of American Poets in 2004. In 2005, he received an Award for Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is the author of Signs & Wonders and Starting from Sleep: New and Selected Poems.

A great classic and great translation

Ovid, or Publius Ovidius Naso, justly deserves his acclaim as one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature alongside Horace and Virgil. And he knows it and doesn't bother to hide it, as he appends this bit of encomium to himself at the very end:

My work is finished now: no wrath of Jove
nor sword nor fire nor futurity
is capable of laying waste to it.
...
wherever Roman governance extends
over the subject nations of the world,
my words will be upon the people's lips
and if there is truth in poets' prophesies [sic, Quandoque bonus dormitat Homerus, as the Romans would say]
then in my fame forever I will live.

So he is the worst kind of genius: a genius who knows he is a genius. Witty, elegant, and lively, his Metamorphoses is a masterpiece of epic poetry that tells of the myriad odd transformations that mythical (and sometimes historical) figures from Orpheus and Icarus to Romulus and Julius Caesar go through. Throughout, he is delightfully and cuttingly mocking of pretty much the entire epic tradition and every great poet that came before him, including no less authors than Virgil and Homer themselves. In at least three elaborate scenes, he makes so much fun of epic battles and they are hilariously and eerily reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino's comical massacre scene in his Kill Bill Vol. 1. Hell, Ovid can be tragic, comic, moving, and sarcastic/satirical all at the same time without lacking in elegance. The poem, 15 books of 1,000 lines per book, so seamlessly integrates story after story of wildly differing genres and plots and lengths that it feels like you're reading a single monomyth without getting bored or overwhelmed. In fact, befitting its title, the stories are constantly changing and sprouting out - each little story feeding into the next and each book spilling into the next without pauses - always keeping the reader on his toe and more often than not leaving the reader breathless and reeling.

Charles Martin did a superb job translating the work. He uses free verse in rendering Latin dactylic hexameter into iambic-friendly English, and it is really good. It's lively, swift, and above all, elegant - or in other words, as Ovid ought to be. Except in the scene where the Muses battle it out with the Pierides, a.k.a. P-Airides whose verse is rendered in modern rap, the translation had everything right and good (though even the surreal rap battle scene was not so bad - just weird). If you're looking to read Ovid, buy this edition. It apparently doesn't add anything new to the original (as many editions do, rather profusely and liberally and thus preposterously), faithful to the original, and very reader-friendly. In my opinion, it belongs to the best translations of the classics.

My Workshop Participants Love this Translation!

I teach mythology and literature in translation. In my mythology section I had my students read a version of Ovid available online. They found the experience painful and dull, even though they were somewhat familiar with the story line. So, when I assigned a translation for my workshop on Ovid, I chose this one on the strength of various reviews. Its a real pleasure to have a group of students become ecstatic about a piece of ancient literature! The Lukeion Project will now being using this translation as required reading.

About the Author
Ms. Medina has devoted her life to the emergence of the Feminine in the lives of women and men. She has integrated the Feminine perspective in her psychotherapeutic practice, and through community development with a focus on environmental justice. After graduating from Colorado State University with a BS in psychology and earning a Master’s degree in Counseling from Arizona State University, Ms. Medina trained in Process-oriented Psychology, with an emphasis in Jungian Psychology, in Zurich, Switzerland. As the Alamosa Riverkeeper, she received the David Getches Flowing Waters Award for improving environmental water resources and recreational values in the Alamosa River through her efforts in collaboration, innovation and inspiration. Cindy treasures solitude that is often interrupted by owls hooting from the cottonwood trees, by coyotes howling from the Alamosa River, and by irrigation water flowing through the acequia (dirt ditch).

I am taking my time in reading this book, immersing myself in the author's reality, her struggles and insights. I'm finding that issues are surfacing, challenging me to once again examine them, relying on the strength and intuitive wisdom provided by the feminine archetype of the Black Madonna. Today's world would have us believe that we can do and be any and all things to everyone. As Ms.Medina so eloquently describes her struggles as a young wife, mother and professional, we are reminded each of us can only be the very best version of our authentic Self. Thank you for taking us on this beautiful journey.

Ms. Medina's book was enlightening, inspirational and at times, humorous. Ms. Medina possesses an innate talent to engage the reader with her descriptive writing. I am confident that Ms. Medina's book has provided me with the tools necessary to develop a deeper relationship with Christ and His mother. I was also intrigued with Ms. Medina's interpretation of dreams. Her tenacity to protect our land and water from pollution is both admirable and courageous.

What I love about this is that I can use it to teach my child to pray. Each spread in the book features a prayer for a specific thing. And it helps me teach my child that prayer isn't just for food or sleeping or for family. Great Prayer Book

I have found that children's prayer books can be excellent resources for teaching children about prayer. The Precious Moments Little Book of Prayers from Tommy Nelson is one such resource. Full of prayers that are just right for children, from prayers about animals to forgiveness, the Little Book of Prayers has some great examples and ideas. We use the prayers in this book as prompts. We read a prayer, and then I encourage my oldest to think of other things to pray for that relate to that prayer. I try to help her understand that we can talk to Yeshua (Jesus) about anything, from itchy mosquito bites to her desire for a puppy.

I like that the Little Book of Prayers is a sturdy board book that my youngest can enjoy too. The prayers are presented through simple rhymes, making them easy to remember. The classic Precious Moments illustrations remind me of my own childhood memories, which makes the book all the more of a treasure. From morning until evening your precious ones will fall in love with this Little Book of Prayers.

Teach Children to Trust in God (Who Is All~Ways in Control) Through Specific Prayers Designed for Daily Interactions

This Little Book of Prayers is an excellent board book for infants to toddlers. The Precious Moments illustrations complement the 18 different prayers offered for little ones to grow in their understanding of God, specific prayer, interacting well with others, and offering daily blessings. The illustrations feature multicultural children in a variety of settings including: God Knows Me (based on Psalm 139) with children at a birthday party; Lord, Keep Me Safe (Psalm 36:7) with 3 toddlers in a barrel sail boat; and A Prayer for the Animals (Job 12:10) which reflects tenderness as children discover the joy and responsibility of caring for the unique creatures they are discovering.
Your precious individual will love turning the pages herself/himself and learning to talk to their Heavenly Father about many of life's situations. Children can learn these prayers through repetition or hand motions as they commit them to memory and treasure them in their hearts. Prayer is a language which calms the heart and helps children to learn that while our world may not be perfect, they can talk personally and specifically to Our Creator about anything they face.
