Convincing common-sense theory of fiction

Mimesis As Make-Believe is one of the most intellectually satisfying books I've read in a long time. Walton begins by exploring some obvious -- but too often neglected -- questions about imagination, fictionality, and make-believe. He then introduces several theories of fiction (from the analytic tradition), and some theories of the ontology fictional beings, until finally introducing his own theory as a solution to the dilemmas others leave unsolved.
Following in the tradition of Wittgenstein and Derrida, Walton argues that fiction comes from playful use of signifiers, what Wittgenstein would call "language games" or "language-play." When we experience fiction, according to Walton, we "act as if" the fictional world were real. Walton introduces an epistemology of fiction, with the operator "it is fictional" functioning much like the operator "it is true" functions in our world -- but with the strong admonition that being fictional is not the same thing as being true.
This philosophy of fiction as a way for humans to "act as if" is appealing on several grounds. It fits well with common sense notions of fiction, and unlike many competing theories, does not force us to go against our pretheoretical ways of talking about fiction. We do not need to commit ourselves to fictional universes housing fictional beings, but we also do not need to say that any statement involving fictional beings is false. Everything is worked out quite precisely, true to the analytic tradition, with a few brief forays into symbolic logic. But unlike many analytic philosopherse, Walton still takes art and fiction seriously, and does not dismiss them as pathological forms of signification.
Overall, this book is entertaining, well-written, an enjoyable read, and intellectually groundbreaking. It provides a way to think about fiction that, for the first time, obviates the need for heroic assumptions or unappealing ontological constructs.

With the exception of the occasional local case study, music-hall history has until now been presented as the history of the London halls. This book attempts to redress the balance by setting music-hall history within a national perspective. Kift also sheds a new light on the roles of managements, performers and audiences. For example, the author confutes the commonly held assumption that most women in the halls were prostitutes and shows them to have been working women accompanied by workmates of both sexes or by their families. She argues that before the 1890s the halls catered predominantly to working-class and lower middle-class audiences of men and women of all ages and were instrumental in giving them a strong and self-confident identity. The hall's ability to sustain a distinct class-awareness was one of their greatest strengths - but this factor was also at the root of many of the controversies which surrounded them. These controversies are at the centre of the book and Kift treats them as test cases for social relations which provide fresh insights into nineteenth-century British society and politics.

After I read this book, I forgot all about how "Stella" got her groove back! Lolita Files' characters, Misty and Reesy don't "wait to exhale" but draw us into their lives - in full force, with great detail. As a young black woman, I could really identify with this book, especially the 90's dating scene. I wanted a friend from TX to read it so much that I bought if for her, including the sequel "Getting to the Good Part," which I'm reading right now. Now that I've discovered Lolita Files, I don't know who Terry M. is anymore; Lolita Files is 'da bomb !

READING SATIFACTION GUARANTEED

Scenes From A Sistah most definitely ranks up there with the greats. It is a story about a friendship that is everything a friendship should be. We all should be so lucky to find a friend that together we balance each other out. I love Misty's career mind and Reesy's ability to speak what's on her mind. They compliment each other because, one's weakness is the others strong points. This book was so good that I could not put it down. I basically finished reading it in one day. Whenever I'm in the bookstore, I make sure that I recommend it to at least one person before I leave. Even the guys will enjoy this one. So, if you don't already own a copy make sure and obtain one. I guarantee you will enjoy it.

Lolita Files is truly a very gifted writer and a very inspiring person. I've had the pleasure of being in her presence on a couple of occasions and if she's anywhere near YOU, make sure you attend and get a chance to hear her read because she brings the characters to life with her voice, expressions, and attitudes so well that if you haven't read it you will and if you have, you'll read it again. She is most definitely one to watch.

And if you read this Lolita, thanks for being yourself. You have most definitely inspired me. You are definitely a great asset to African American Readers and Inspiring Writers. I, along with many others, look forward to the next book

Finally a novel of TRUE SISTAHSHIP

"Scenes from a Sistah" is something that is known tobe fiction but in return it's nonfiction. In other words, this novelis true & demostrates everything that actually happens in a "Sistah's" life. Reesy is someone I believe we all know, if it's not ourselves. I loved her, she was full of SPUNK!! Now, Misty (career wise) is where I would love to be. But the sista was totally clueless when it came to men. She reminds me of the saying, " She got book sense, but no common sense". Now, that was MISTY!!! But over all I admired the friendship... the bonding between two sistahs!! This relationship really exist, it's true to the heart. Great Novel... a must read!!!

A book that explains how I feel!

I felt very alone until I found out there was a name for someone like me. This book is a must read for kids who have grown up in a culture and country different from their birth country. I met the author, David Pollock, at a Woodstock School (boarding school in India) reunion many years ago. He gave a talk about Third Culture Kids. I had never heard that term used before. It was a very moving experience to have him describe exactly how I felt. He absolutely understood me.

A person who has lived their entire life in one place has no idea the emotional turmoil of one who has lived their formative years in another country from their parents' (birth) country. I went through culture shock when coming home (to the U.S.) for college. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been through this experience. You will know you are not alone and it will help you to heal and understand your emotions.

TCKs - Fascinating population

This book is invaluable for anyone who is or cares about a third culture kid (TCK):  one who has "spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents' cultures".  This experience is common to children of missionaries, parents who work for international corporations, foreign service, aid organizations, educators, media representatives, military service, or whatever takes them out of their home country for an extended period of time.  This TCK experience can also happen actually to children who remain in their home country but live in a different culture within it, e.g. those whose parents work on an Indian reservation in the U.S. while not being born to that culture.

Many of the differences the reader would probably be aware of, such as differences in eye contact, handshaking, pointing and other mannerisms.  I remember walking out of a training about Native American communication where we talked about the fact that direct eye contact can be a sign of disrespect to elders in that culture, and having a conversation with a young man who made no eye contact with me.  My whole body strongly said 
"he's lying or hiding something" - not to be trusted.  I could THINK all day long about those differences, but had to be sure to pay attention to the responses my body was having and not react based on my ignorance.  The authors of this book go more deeply into the effect these differences have on relationships, self-esteem, isolation, etc.  

Other issues addressed are, e.g. how does one form deep attachments with those around them when they know they are always separated eventually.  There is no payoff and lots of pain in forming attachments.

Another example of an unforeseen difficulty certainly is education. One Finnish young man grew up in Taiwan, and chose to complete his post-secondary education and med school in Chicago. English was spoken in all of his schooling and he would have had to compete with Finnish students who had been educated in Finnish to get into med school in his home country, and didn't think he would qualify.  He has realized it would be very difficult for him to EVER return to Finland to practice medicine.  He does not have a medical vocabulary in Finnish and would be looked down upon by his colleagues for having trained elsewhere.

Restlessness is not a small factor in the lives of TCKs as adults, regarding relationships, careers, and just living arrangements.  The norm is to migrate and they would need to look very carefully to determine if it was really time to leave or rather a need to work on the relationship or job and NOT leave.  The problem seems to manifest in either the extreme of needing change often, or not ever wanting change again.  One woman married a man with about 8 jillion stamps on his passport, thinking they would enjoy a lifetime of travel, only to discover that he never wanted to leave the country again.

This book does talk about the advantages of being a TCK also, altho some of those things are probably more well known.  Obviously an increased knowledge and experience base is  an advantage, along with some social skills developed from the need to meet new people.  What comes up for me is that that is the person I want in a staff meeting, able to bring different perspectives.  Also, a TCK often has a worldwide network of friends.  TCKs of course have their own culture with other TCKs when they get together, which can be very helpful for them.  

The authors look at both weaknesses and strengths that develop for many TCKs  and offers some helpful ideas for dealing with some of the grief and loss issues.  I personally found this book to be very interesting reading whether or not the reader has a personal interest in the issue.  5 out of 5 stars.

Required reading for ex-pats/ Kindle version is just fine

Why didn't anyone tell me about this book 10 years ago? This should be required reading for all State Department, DOD, corporate, and any other families moving overseas.

- A bit dry in the beginning.
- Has stories sprinkled throughout the book.
- Great practical suggestions on how to make transitions from country to country.
- Section about making choices about education overseas.
- Section about repatriating.
- Gives resources if you want to connect with other ex-pats.

*** The Kindle version: Although it needs a better edit, it isn't nearly as bad as another reviewer made it out to be. (Goodness! When I'm limited to only being able to ship 7,400 lbs, Kindle books saves room for more homeschooling books!)

Only bc it was necessary

I am a psych major and have read many University level books. I have given the book NOT the seller this rating because although there is so much useful information and visible quality, it lacked examples for the different terms used. Also I have found several typos :-/. Isn't that what editor's should help prevent?

A must for any collector of adult comics

As I wrote in my 2013 article on Cherry Poptart comics; "The title character, described as 'blonde, cute, sexy, fun, friendly, and smart,' (in addition to always braless, very openly bisexual, and eternally 18) was ranked #82 in the Comic Buyer's Guide's 100 Sexiest Women in Comics." Cherry Poptart symbolized the end of an era and the first and second issues are THE ones to have as subsequent issues dropped "Poptart" from Cherry's name because the Kellog company (the makers of Pop-Tarts® toaster pastries) threatened legal action against the creator and publisher if they continued to use their trademarked name.

Also in this first issue is Vampironica, who only appeared in this first issue. As one may gather by her name, she was sort of a cross between Vampirella and Veronica from the Archie comics. As one might also guess, Archie Comics threatened a lawsuit due to similarities between Vampironica and their character, so this issue was the first and last we saw of Vampironica.
