Very useful little reference

As someone who works with property and casualty insurance a lot, this has been a great reference. It appears more focused on that than life or health insurance, but certainly has some terms from all areas.

Occasionally some definitions get bogged down in legalese or finance-speak, but if you read them carefully it's pretty easy to get a good idea. One thing I also love is the dictionary covers a lot of tangentially related teams that can frequently come up in an insurance context.

Questa seconda edizione contiene diversi ampliamenti e modifiche al testo pubblicato nel 2012, che ha colmato un vuoto nel panorama italiano di testi universitari riguardanti la Fotonica. Dopo avere esposto in modo sintetico ma rigoroso i concetti che stanno alla base del funzionamento del laser e della propagazione della luce nella materia, sono descritti i principali componenti e dispositivi ottici e optoelettronici, quali le fibre ottiche, gli amplificatori, i modulatori e i rivelatori. Il capitolo finale fornisce anche cenni sulle principali applicazioni. In coda a tutti i capitoli, tranne l’ultimo, sono proposti degli esercizi. Il livello della trattazione e la scelta degli argomenti rendono il testo particolarmente adatto a un corso semestrale per studenti di Ingegneria e di Fisica, ma il volume può essere utile più in generale per dottorandi, ricercatori e progettisti che desiderino un’introduzione agile ai concetti e ai metodi della Fotonica.

About the Author

Vittorio Degiorgio è stato Professore Ordinario di Fisica della Materia presso l’Università di Pavia dal 1980 al 2011, e dal 2011 è Professore Emerito presso la stessa università.  E’ stato Direttore del Dipartimento di Elettronica,  Direttore del Centro Laser, e Presidente della Commissione Dottorati dell’Università di Pavia. Nel periodo 1967-1980 è stato ricercatore del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, e nel 1968-69  “visiting scientist” presso il Massachusetts Institute of Technology. V.D. è “fellow” della Optical Society of America, e socio benemerito della Società Italiana di Fisica, ed è stato membro del “Physics Panel” dell’Unione Europea. Attualmente ha pubblicato più di 200 articoli riguardanti principalmente la Fotonica e la Fisica Statistica, ed è autore e curatore di numerosi libri.

Ilaria Cristiani  è Professore Associato presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale e dell’Informazione dell'Università di Pavia. Dopo la laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica ha svolto ricerca presso i laboratori di Ricerca Avanzata della Società Pirelli Cavi e Sistemi (Milano) nell’ambito di un Dottorato di Ricerca.  La sua attività scientifica ha riguardato prevalentemente l’ottica non lineare e i dispositivi fotonici integrati per le applicazioni alle comunicazioni ottiche e alla biofotonica. E' autrice di circa 75 articoli scientifici pubblicati su riviste internazionali e di tre brevetti internazionali. Durante la sua carriera  ha coordinato diversi progetti di cooperazione scientifica in ambito nazionale e internazionale nel campo della fotonica. Fino al 2010 è stata inoltre coordinatore di un Master in Scienza dei Materiali presso l'Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori (IUSS) di Pavia.

Taking a humorous approach to an embarrassing problem, this book turns the (literally) nitty-gritty into something witty. When a tiny head louse sneaks into the classroom, it makes straight for Ms. Calypso, the teacher, and her enormous red mane of "cascading curls." Soon the whole class is scritching and scratching. The principal, Mr. Trout, asks parents to apply special conditioner to the children's hair, but the little pests come right back. It turns out Ms. Calypso lives alone and has no one to help treat her tresses. Mr. Trout gallantly offers, and the two fall in love, for an almost happily-ever-after ending. Moss (previously teamed with Durand for The Snoops) includes plenty of solid information as well as loopier touches (as the louse lays eggs, it sings, "Watch the teacher scritch and scratch, When my creepy, crawly babies hatch"). Durand's cartoon humans have Mr. Potato Head features and toothy, ear-splitting grins. The classroom is realistically littered with bookbags, flying paper airplanes, toy cars, etc., and the children pester one another endlessly: "Ruby undid Polly's braid. Joshua painted on Peter's back. And Sammy trimmed Mark's bangs." Zippy graphics add lots of dash to an already funny text; the paths of lice are indicated with dotted lines and arrows, type fonts shift for emphasis, and passages of text appear under, over and around the spreads and vignettes. Moss and Durand win high marks for their potent combination of comedy and candor. Ages 4-8.

Grade 1-3-This book pokes good-humored fun at every parent's perpetual school-year dread-head lice. When a mama louse crawls into Ms. Calypso's classroom, she immediately makes a home in the teacher's cascading red locks. The eggs hatch and soon all of her students are infected. Mr. Trout, the principal, and the teacher send notes home, instructing parents to comb a special conditioner through their children's hair so that the lice will slide into the bath water and float away. This works for the children, but Ms. Calypso lives alone and has no one to help her comb the solution through her hair. The original louse stays there and soon the entire class is scritch-scratching again. The school sends home another note and Mr. Trout offers to help Ms. Calypso wash her hair. They fall in love, get married, and there's no more scratching in Mrs. Trout's classroom. Moss portrays head-lice infestations as a problem that can affect anyone: teachers and students, boys and girls. Durand's humorous cartoon illustrations depict a mother louse sporting a pink bow, gleefully singing and running with her beige eggs in two of her six hands. The diverse classroom is full of many different types of hair-braids, curls, and crew cuts. While the very idea may make some readers slightly squirmy, Scritch Scratch makes light of a "lousy" subject. This is wacky back-to-school fare.

Cute book.

I'm not sure that I would have ever found this book had I not been specifically looking for a book on lice. My sister n law is a second grade teacher and her first year teaching she came home with a funny lice story. She kept getting the goosebumps talking about it which was only amusing to me. I bought her this book for her class and she loved it.

Uh-Oh, Itchy Head.....

She took a look around, saw Ms Calypso's "cascading curls," dove through the air, and landed, making a nice little home for herself and her tiny eggs. Pretty soon Ms Calypso began to scritch scratch, and soon her entire class was scritching and scratching as the head-lice scampered from head to head to head. Mr Trout, the principal, sent a note home: "Please comb special conditioner through your children's hair and make it so slippery that all the head lice slide into the bath water and float away." The treatment worked perfectly. "There was not a single louse in sight. They were all gone. Well, all except one!" Poor Ms Calypso lived alone, and had no one to help her condition and comb, and soon, the whole class was scritching and scratching all over again. This time Mr Trout sent the note home, and then volunteered to help Ms Calypso with her hair. They fell in love and got married, and there hasn't been a scritch or a scratch ever since...well at least not in Mrs Trout's room..... It's hard to believe that anyone could author an appealing story about head-lice infestation, but Miriam Moss and illustrator, Delphine Durand seem to have accomplished the impossible. Ms Moss' engaging and entertaining text takes the mystery and stigma out of the head-lice issue, as she shows that anyone can be a victim. Ms Durand's bold, bright, and busy cartoon-like illustrations enhance the story, and are filled will expression, vibrant color, playful humor and eye-catching detail. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Scritch Scratch is a clever, funny romp that takes a lousy topic and makes light of it with fact instead of fiction.

The International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), established in 1962, is an intergovernmental organization of four­ teen countries: Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and Yugoslavia. Four institutes (Bari, Italy; Chania, Greece; Montpellier, France and Zaragoza, Spain) provide post-graduate education at the Master of Science level. CIHEAM promotes research networks on Mediterranean agricultural priorities, supports the organization of specialized education in member countries, holds seminars and workshops bringing together technologists and scientists involved in Mediterranean agriculture and regularly produces diverse publications including the series 'Options Mediterraneennes'. Through these activities, CIHEAM promotes North/South dialogue and international co-operation for agricultural development in the Mediterranean region. Plant breeding is, since 1982, one of the fields in which CIHEAM is con­ ducting a programme of training and promotion of research, through its Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza. The programme includes a one-year advanced specialization course, a series of two-week courses for professionals, and support for collaborative research activities in Mediterranean-relevant species. Many of these activities are organized in col­ laboration with national and international institutions. The publication in 1993 of Plant Breeding. Principles and Prospects, which ini­ tiated the Chapman & Hall's Plant Breeding Series, has become an important feature of CIHEAM's plant breeding programme. We are now pleased to add a further volume to that series: the present book, Statistical Methods for Plant Variety Evaluation.

About the Author
ALLISON ROSSETT, professor of Educational Technology at San Diego State University, is a consultant in the design, development, and evaluation of performance and training systems. A native New Yorker, ping pong champion in her youth, and yo-yoer in training, Allison has offered keynote speeches in this country and abroad. She teaches classes and consults on instructional design, learning technologies, performance analysis and needs assessment, and indepAndent learning.Rossett was the recipient of an Association for Educational Technology Book of the Year Award for her Training Needs Assessment. Her book, A Handbook of Job Aids, published by Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer, won the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) top book award and an Association for Educational Technology Tool of the Year Award. She has also published dozens of articles, edited journals, offered seminars, coached and advised business and government leaders, evaluated programs, and managed corporate contracts and federal and state grants.

hands-on guide that is immediately useful

Overall, this book is a straightforward examination of performance analysis that explains why p.a. is more practial than traditional "training." It's a godsend for people who have to implement a plan right away because of the abundance of checklists and templates. I have some minor criticisms though since I have read several books in a similar category. 1 -- the author does not write as professionally as others (Rothwell, for example, who wrote Beyond training and Development) and spends too much time touting her earlier books 2 -- often the information borders on the extremely obvious 3 -- the book is overpriced as many textbooks are. P.A. boils down to the fact that it's really a "casing the joint" type of strategy -- get a general idea of the situation before diving in. All this fancy terminology for such a basic idea... still, it can definitely save a company a lot of time and money to do this common sense approach before spending money on training.

Guess who's coming to dinner

This book serves as the first course at a performance analysis dinner-it whets the appetite and entices the reader to look further and deeper. It provides the reader with tasty morsels of information without weighing the reader down in the heavier technicalities of performance analysis. First Things Fast is a quick and easy reference for the professional trainer and one that I will keep on hand for future use. It addresses the situation as it is-the way things are-and provides concrete examples and solutions for those involved with the process. Because of the quick and easy reading that characterizes the book, I would recommend this book to those who are seeking a basic understanding of performance analysis without wanting to invest a great deal of time. I would also recommend it to those who want a quick reference for use in their performance analysis work (the templates are an effective starting point for the line of questioning which needs to occur). First Things Fast has the potential to be an extremely useful tool for those individuals who are in the position to decide what needs to be done and why.

Great guide to quick human performance analysis

This book is a great help for anyone who is asked to analyze a performance problem. It provides a series of checklists and job aids to help someone figure out what's going on and how to fix it. It considers lots of problems and teaches you how to decide if the employee needs instruction, motivation or a changed environment. I really enjoyed this very practical and easy to read handbook; it avoids all the theory and jargon and puts the emphasis on analyzing human performance problems in a quick, efficient manner.
