About the Author

Francesco Cesarini has taught Erlang/OTP for fourteen years to all parties involved in the software cycle, including students, developers, support and testers, as well as project and technical managers. He has helped set up Erlang development centres in Ireland, the US and the UK. In 1999, the year after Erlang was released as open source, Francesco moved from Sweden to London and founded Erlang Training and Consulting, a company which he is a majority shareholder of today.

Steve Vinoski has spent most of his software development career, spanning over more than 30 years, working in the areas of middleware and distributed computing systems. He discovered Erlang in 2006 after nearly 20 years of developing middleware systems primarily in C++ and Java, and he's used Erlang as his primary development language ever since. Steve has contributed to a variety of Erlang projects, including the Riak database, developed and maintained by his employer, Basho Technologies, and the Yaws web server. He's also contributed dozens of bug-fix and feature patches to the Erlang/OTP codebase.

Steve is also a long-time author, having written or co-authored over 100 published articles and papers covering middleware, distributed systems, and web development, as well as a couple books. He wrote "The Functional Web" column for IEEE Internet Computing (IC) magazine from 2008 through 2012, and prior to that, from 2002-2008, wrote the "Toward Integration" column for IC as well. He also serves on the magazine’s editorial board. From 1995-2005, Steve co-authored the popular “Object Interconnections” column on distributed object computing for the C++ Report and later the C/C++ Users Journal. Over the years Steve has also given hundreds of conference and workshop presentations and tutorials on middleware, distributed systems, web development, and programming languages, and has served as chair or program committee member for many dozens of conferences and workshops.

Great resource for learning how to think in OTP!

I had been trying to learn OTP, and this book really helped cement the concepts in my mind. It's very thorough, and I found it easy to follow and digest.

One of the best book in Scalable and Distributed systems and more so with Erlang/OTP

I believe the whole point of writing reviews is to help others decide by giving an unbiased view which is very difficult most of the time. Yet, I'll try to highlight certain facts along with my comments without stealing the thunder in any way. The initial chapters of the book require basic level of understanding of Erlang/OTP while later chapters (ch-13 to 15) are mostly generic. The content is very well organized which is great for both cover-to-cover and ad-hoc content reading styles. The book takes a practical approach towards the subject, which needless to say in itself is very complex. This approach helps the reader to grasp the topic while looking at real world scenarios. It also does a great job at clearly demarcating the corner-cases and special conditions which can be skipped the first time for cover-to-cover book reading style. This helps in getting a hold of the usual (sunny-day) cases before digging into the rainy-day or special conditions. Although I was familiar with prior art on various architectural styles (say Amazon DynamoDB and Riak) but reading this book made more sense as to how that applies and more so with Erlang/OTP. In my view the book maintains a very delicate balance between content and its application while stops just before trying to spoon-feed too much. So, it does what any good book must do - builds the interest in the subject and encourage self learning / discovery which follows thereafter. I must warn you though if you are not an Erlanger, you would become one after reading this book.
The book maintains a good balance between text, code and pictures to explain the subject. Although it was clear to me due to prior art but at certain junctures the graphics should be enhanced to aid the first-time-readers. I am a huge fan of separate reference section, which is missing in the book although they are embedded at places where things are introduced for the first time. Having a separate section saves time when coming back just for them apart exposing the user to specialized content (say research papers). Kudos to Francesco and Steve for making the topic look ever so simple.

The advice here is invaluable

I highly recommend this book. My favorite part of the book is the last 4 chapters. Less heavy on code, these chapters describe stratgies and give examples of how to design scalable and fault tolerant distributed systems. And at the end of each chapter the authors sum up and accumulate a list of ten steps that you need to follow when building such systems.

Worthwhile Is An Understatement - Coffee Is A Necessity

I've studied Gann and have read all his previous books and this one is the most useful of them all. As a Financial Astrologer I saw the direct evidence in print of his using what we call "Astronomic Indicators" though it is painfully incomplete - foolish of me to even consider he'd include his "grail" everyone wants to know! Astrology may or may not be that grail, but astrology is one of the great secrets in the stock and commodity markets. It's the knowledge many of the Wall Street 1% know but will never say aloud. No broker could ever tell his or her client to wait for Jupiter to be in Cancer before buying that homebuilder stock. It's a subject not unlike the secrets of the Masons, and Gann was one of them as well. 33rd Degree if I recall correctly.

The most you could gather from the limited amount of astrology for trading in this book, is this genius did indeed use planetary motion in predicting market movements. It's his handwriting. Gann associated with some of the more prominent astrologers of his time, Jayne and Johndro among them. If you do a search for Gann you'll find probably hundreds of websites who claim to know his techniques and would gladly sell them to you, but I wouldn't believe it. The best of what he used went to the grave with him. What others think he used, they are at best, guessing. The complete picture was likely discovered by a select few but they would never sell that information - they're making money with it by trading! It will be up to you to put together some of these pieces and give it your best shot.

For those of you who are traders and not astrologers, you don't at all need to know astrology to benefit from this book. If you're interested in astrology and the markets, pick up what's called an Ephemeris, or better yet, a copy of Solar Fire 8 astrology software if you're interested in learning his known methodology. Planet longitude equivalents to price are evident, but there is far more to it that is not in this book or anywhere else for that matter. The May 1948 Soybeans chart is perhaps the most complete publicly known example, though it's difficult to decipher as his penmanship was not that of a draftsman of his time - what would've helped immensely!

There's more to it than astrology of course. The book is a great asset in how his thinking process operated in the course of making trades. The magnitude of profit in his trades were astonishing and yet routine in his descriptions of them. Knowing how a master trader thinks and in describing details of his trades alone is a gold mine. You don't dismiss a man who over 45 years had 92% winning trades. This is not fiction, as it was witnessed and documented on the trading floor by Ticker Magazine in 1909.

The most intriguing part of the book for me was the part where not only his astrological indicators were shown, but also the various grids and squares of numbers for determining price and time, all drawn by hand. These include "The Square of Nine," "Square of Twelve" and the other various grids and circle graphs to include the octagon and the "NYSE Permanent Chart." The one on page 323 made me wonder if Gann had Asperger's Syndrome but was able live an otherwise normal life. It may just be his IQ and attention span dwarfs most mortals. When I think of what he could've done at that time with the computers we have now...

The upshot is the book is definitely a bargain for what you get. Just make sure you have a few boxes of K-Cups and your Keurig because you'll need it. You cannot read this book in a day or a weekend! This is more like a one-year college course, so don't rush! As odd as this may sound, you can't just read it and know what he's communicating. You'll need to actively visualize while he narrates his trades to fully understand his process. This is not a canned trading system by any means, but when you get to the end of the book, if you've taken good notes, you'll at the very least have learned swing trading from perhaps the greatest master trader of all.

I am still reading the book, trust me, Gann is not easy reading. However, compared to the other books I have read of Gann's, this one is definitely THE TRADING COURSE explaining his technique in detail. I would recommend it for any trader grasping to make sense of the moves any market makes. Since this book is titled by Gann as the Master Commodities Course, if you are not already familiar with the basics of his technique, you might read through it at first and wonder, what the hell is he talking about? But if you are familiar with the basics of his technique then this book should shed more light on those techniques and if you follow the rules suggested by Gann, a lot of the guess work normally associated with trading will disappear.

For the Gann fans, this book was definitely written by him. Mr Gann talks of angles, number charts and common sense trading rules. The rules that Gann built on over a long trading history and still so very relevant in today's markets. Mr Gann leads you in with the basics and builds on this base. This book does get somewhat "heavier" towards the end and careful study of what is being shown is a must. I found reading this book in sections and understanding what is being told before moving on but I still return to earlier sections and find something I missed. Hidden Gems ! This book could be used as a beginning and retained as your trading level increases, a must for the trading library. The thing that continues to hold me in awe of Mr Gann, is this man developed his charts, angles, and mathematics that are involved before the days of the electronic calculation devices.

Introduction

The irresistible appeal of a slow-cooker is its convenience and simplicity. Turn it on, and it cooks dinner while you do other things. You have no pot to watch. It doesnt burn or spill over. Just set it and let it do its work. Next thing you know, your kitchen smells heavenly, like a home-cooked meal, and you feel like your personal chef did all the work.

Slow-cookers first appeared in the 1970s, and you could get your crock pot in harvest gold, avocado green, or maybe decorated with orange flowers. Back then, the Crock-Pot (as the Rival Company, which is now a brand of Sunbeam Products, trademarked it) was mostly favored for cooking tough cuts of meat. The Crock-Pot left the limelight for a while, but in 2002, when I wrote my first slow-cooker cookbook (Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker, The Harvard Common Press), slow-cookers were enjoying a comeback. The goal of my first slow cooker book was to show how versatile slow-cookers are for vegetarian cooking and can be used to prepare everything from breakfast to dessert.

Fast forward ten years from that first book, and the popularity of slow-cookers shows no sign of waning. In addition, more people are enjoying a plant-based diet than ever before. Since that first slow-cooker cookbook was published, I've written many other titles, but I never stopped developing new recipes, discovering new techniques, and exploring new ideas for vegan slow-cooking. As I've explored new ways to use the slow-cooker for plant-based meals, I've been continually amazed at the effectiveness of slow cookers for vegan recipes. Over the years, I have developed scores of new recipes and explored the worlds cuisines to discover more creative ways to prepare food using the slow-cooker method. What I came up with was enough to fill another book.

I'm pleased and proud, therefore, to present this new book to you. It contains more than 200 recipes using only plant-based ingredients. I've also included pages of basic information and lots of new tips and pointers for making the most of your slow cooker experience. I've worked hard to make the recipes accessible using most sizes of slow-cookers. In addition to being 100 percent plant-based, many of the recipes are also gluten-free, soy-free, or low in fat.

Review of Abridged Cassette Audiobook

I listened to the abridged audiocassette version of the book. Covey is a master in providing a framework for trust based, employee empowerment. The premise of the book/cassette program is that be developing a set of principles and paragigms that are valid and applicable across a large series of situations and events. Rather than focusing on management - which is performance and situation specific - the focus needs to be on the development and training of a principles based culture where the employee/family member/ etc can apply the principles in any situation. Starting with being trustworthy, then building to trust based relationships, Covey emphasizes trust and the underpinning principle upon which the entire paradigm is based.

The abridged version is a solid and interesting listen and can be completed in just a couple of hours. Worth buying.

Classic Covey

Some reviewers bemoan each and every Covey release, complaining that it is re-hashed material. These critics obviously are missing the whole "principles" point. Principles won't change from publication to publication.

If you want to feel rooted and comfortable making organizational decisions, the author points out that this must be done in the context of human needs at the fore. Be prepared to re-invent yourself, and use this book as your guide. I use the word "organizational" so that readers of this review don't misconstrue it as a business book. An organization is described in the text as a group of two or more with a common purpose: read - family, marriage, friendship, school, etc.

Be prepared to review and reflect iteratively, as many of the points made are difficult to grasp on the first pass. This difficulty is likely caused by trying to relate to the material from a faulty and deep-rooted paradigm - I was guilty - , but persevere - it it well worth it in the end.

If you are looking for a "7-Habits" and "Principle-Centered Leadership" rolled into one book, "The Eighth Habit' may be your best bet. I strongly recommend all three in sequence.

Covey is simply the best, if you are prepared to do the hard work... on yourself.

This is NOT the unabridged audio recording of the book. Its a recording of a seminar about topics in the book. I purchased both the audio and the paperback and was disappointed to find that I could not listen to the book as I had intended. It was an interesting lecture but was labeled as what it was. A waste of time and money for a book report that I can't do based on off listening to and taking notes on something other than the book and using the book as reference in my writing.

This book is a "must-have" for doctoral candidates. It's a statistics book within a research methodologies book so it contains a truck-load of information. Not an easy read, but unbeatable as a reference.
