Although it was listed as used, the book was in perfect condition.The story is wonderfully written and opened up a world I never knew existed. I feel as though I now have first hand familiarity with life in a remote far away land and a never heard of culture. If I were 25 years younger, I would love to explore this area in person.

W. Montgomery Watt wrote Muhammad at Mecca in response to his perceived need for a new look at the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) set in a fuller historical context. He states that part of this need arose from the broader desire of twentieth century historians to see historical events in relation to the economic, social, and political background prevalent at that particular time. The author asserts that the special feature of this biography of Muhammad is thus not that it combs available sources more minutely than others have done previously, but that it pays fuller attention to these material factors, and attempts to answer many questions that have hardly been raised in the past. When this work is juxtaposed with Watt's other work Muhammad at Medina, the two together constitute a comprehensive history of the life of Muhammad and the origins of the Islamic community. The author declares in the introduction of this work that it is first and foremost written for the historian. He warns though that there is inherently the human inclination of 'tendential shaping' by early historians to make allowances for distortions or even to make it more acceptable within the shadow of other religions such as Christianity or Judaism. Though many bibliographic sources used for this work are based on earlier primary sources, one must remember that there are no known written sources other than the Qur'an about the life of the Prophet written prior to about 150 years after his death.

A rare and objective account

Muhammed at Mecca is a remarkable volume that covers the first part of the prophet of Islam and the early days of his young nation prior to 622 CE, the year of Hijra when Muhammed left Mecca to Medina which also marks the first year of the Muslim calander. With much skill and ability to retrodict events and put them in their historical context, Watt offers this book as one of the most authentic works on the subject.

The volume is an academic work and might not appeal to all kinds of readers save for academics and those who are very interested in the subject. Watt employs the modern methodology in classifying, crediting and discrediting almost all of the primary sources of the time. Watt then objectively treats these sources and draws conclusions that a reader can rarely find in other places.

His gifted style helped a great deal in making a lengthy volume full of details entertaining for the reader and rather catchy. Those who are interested in reading about the whole story of Muhammed and his mission should also buy Watt's second volume, Mohammed at Medina, which covers his post Hijra years until his death in 632.

Too bad the book is out-of-print. Publishers should consider marketing a second edition since it would certainly deserve the attention and interest of many scholars and readers today.

The only valid biography about Muhammad and Islam is by Ibn Ishaq, whose remarkable book was censored by Ibn Hisham. The English translation is The Life of Muhammad by Guillaume, who made the fatal mistake of using the title God for Allah, and so misses the most vitally important point of Islam.
Tabari used Ishaq's original uncensored text for his History.
Read them both, with the relevant Hadith, traditional stories by Bukhari and Muslim.
Muhammad was the messenger of Allah, not God.
In Arabic, the Qur'an and Sharia, Almighty God is Ilah and Allah is ‘the god’ in English.
In Arabic and the Qur'an, God/Ilah is Al-Rahman, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious.
These years in Mecca are extremely interesting, because Muhammad invoked Ilah, Ar Rahman, as well as Allah the pagan god of Arabia. Muhammad faced the sacred place of Jerusalem while praying, in honour of Abraham. During these years most of the chapters and verses are in the name of Ilah. In his last years in Mecca he began invoking only Allah as his one god. The final invocation in the name of Ilah occurred in the first year at Yathrib [Medina] in chapter 2. From then on only the name of Allah was invoked.

In just two short years, Steve and Derek have cemented a place for themselves among the worlds most well-known and successful animal activists, accumulating hundreds of thousands of followers from all over the world. In 2014 Steve and Derek founded the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary in Campbellville, Ontario, where they continue to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned and abused farmed animals.

Prepare to laugh, cry, love, and ponder...

I preordered this in January and it arrived today, the day the book was released. I've followed Esther on FB for so long, that Steve and Derek feel like friends that I wave to everyday as I leave the house. Even tossed a few dollars into the fund to help buy the sanctuary, holding my breath, watching the fund grow higher each day. It's been a wild ride, and certainly a unique story that no one else can tell. Others may own a pig, but that pig isn't going to become a worldwide sensation, get people to donate huge funds for a sanctuary, and turn people into vegans. There's magic at work here. Enter Esther, the girl who made Steve, Derek, and herself a household name. The book is funny, endearing, thought provoking, and reminds us that there are many other animals that are just as loving and intelligent as our current domesticated pets, and that they don't deserve the treatment or fate they receive in this world. You may not go vegan after reading the book, but most everything about Esther's story will give you pause, a reason to at least consider things that you didn't think about before. Oddly enough, it was yet another person trying to take advantage of an animal that brought Esther into Steve and Derek's life: a person trying to make a quick buck by selling baby commercial pigs, passing them off as "mini pigs" in an online ad. Fate stepped in, Esther was spared a horrific and short life before becoming a package of bacon, and instead became a social media personality that has followers around the globe. No one saw that coming! It helps that her dads have so much personality, and can capture Esther's thoughts and expressions in photos and then write hilarious captions from Esther's point of view. This book is a quick read, very entertaining, and will hopefully make each person ask themselves, "What can I do to make this world one notch better while I'm here? Even if my actions cannot fix the whole problem, what is my personal decision about partaking in this issue? Am I humane, as well as human?" Steve, Derek, and Esther have unknowingly immortalized their legacy; their names, this story, and the current animal sanctuary they run will be remembered and loved forever. Do two things different today: donate five dollars to an animal sanctuary, and give up eating animal meat three days a week. Your heart, soul, and health will thank you. And, you may find yourself becoming a member of Esther's Army. It feels good to partake in something so positive. Esther's followers are now a massive, global family. Take the first step and come join us. No pressure to change; however, Esther might make you see the world differently, without using any words. Yes, you can indeed be both humane and human. Esther and the boys are blazing the trail to prove that very fact. Great work, guys! You have indeed changed the world for the better.

Two Men and a Mini Pig.

I LOVED this book. I am bias because I already love Esther, her Dads, the dogs and all of the farm but reading this book was a true delight. I already knew most of Esther's story but the added insights never shared before on social media were a fun read. The book brings both out loud laughs as well as worries and also happy tears. If you know Esther or just want to read a heartwarming story of two men and their pig then I highly recommend this book. It is a must for any Esther fan.

BEST book I have EVER read!!! Esther is Enchanting!!!!

Thank you doesn't begin to describe my gratitude for sharing your (and Esther's) story. I absolutely LOVE this book!!! I laughed, I cried, I laughed some more and I nodded like a crazy woman when I've found myself in such similar situations I had to read it to my husband and then to my son who found the similarities uncanny and laughed with me!
Esther has been a big part of my life over the last year. I suffer from severe depression and anxiety and Esther ALWAYS brings me out of the darkness with her kindness and humor! My diet has also changed thanks to her and I am so happy to be a part of The Esther Movement! Thank you a million times over to sharing her with the world and writing this amazing book that continues to give me, and so many other humans and animals alike, hope for tomorrow!

Old memories made manifest....

I started reading comics in the UK when I was about 9 yrs old. At first it was marvel reprints, then 2000AD came out in the mid 70's and everything changed. Every week, pure thrillpower would beam into my brain. The stories were variable, the art wide ranging in talent, but it was a breeding ground for some of the very best the industry has to offer. Alan Moore, what can I say? The man has produced incredible work that stays with me. I bought this hoping to revisit my youth, and was astonished at what I had forgotten, how much of the pithy shorter tales in 2000AD were from his pen. Receiving this volume was like owning a time machine back to my more naive days. The stories may be simple, or based on old canards in some cases, but the execution is fun, and shows a side of Alan Moore that many may think difficult to find. The man has a great sense of humor! I cherished re-reading the Abelard Snazz stories, I had flashbacks to more innocent times with the time twisters tales. Reading these stories dredged up forgotten memories from the depths of my brain. It was like a 30th years reunion with my own past. I loved it.
Best of all, this is Alan Moore I can share with my nine year old, he can read them, and appreciate the stories as I did.
This was a great buy.

Way Down on the Alan More List

This book, like most of the really early Alan Moore material, is for a Moore completest... Most of it is not up to par with Moore's Swampthing or later material. However, you do get to see the beginnings of his genius.

Most of the material is sort of tedious (by modern standards), but every now and again a story will stand out (mostly in the middle of the book - the reverse time material).

If you want great Moore material go for his run on Swampthing, Promethia, From Hell, Miracleman, Neonomicon, or The Watchmen... If you want to see early Moore then this is an OK source, but I think Halo Jones would still be better.

A unique effort...

Potential energy surfaces are instrumental in all aspects of nanoscale phenomena and they are well suited to be treated as a unifying theme for the study of chemical physics. In this respect, this book is unique... The topics it tackles, while interest to many researchers in manifold fields, have never been distilled into a single volume. And this first effort deserves kudos.

Each chapter(there are 10 chapters in the whole book)is supported with an exhaustive list of references and is reasonably self contained. Moreover, there is an immediate sense of coherence and the topical flow is rather well laid out. However, it is not a textbook with all that it implies. Wales provides a updated (as of the time of his writing (2003)) account of various topics, but none of them are treated assuming a classroom style. However, the reader is referred to the pertinent literature with valuable remarks as to what is to be found in which particular reference. The proofs to the equations are largely avoided but their origin and the physical implications are given a fair treatment. The required
mathematical background to follow the text is rather modest, while the wide spectrum of topics covered curbs its potential as a real page turner for the novice.

The illustrations are abound and in color which is a definitive plus. The binding and the paper quality is first class. The typeface is Donald Knuth`s Computer Modern with 11/14pt letter size, and this genuinely alleviates the reading process. My only quibble is the uneven quality of the images permeating the text as some of them have been culled from different sources.

I think the book serves its purpose very well and it is a good introductory exposition to a subject with utmost importance in nanoscience. I highly recommend it to anyone whose work involves materials science, chemisty or physics.

Can't get enough

Wales must have cloned himself multiple times in order to have found time to have written such a comprehensive book. I'll leave the science for people smarter than I to judge, but I'm giving it 5 stars based on its visual impact alone. I just can't get enough of his beautifully created graphics of undulating potential energy surfaces and cluster rearangement pathways (to name but two examples). Wales is showing us the elegance of his chosen field- and in a way that's simple enough for us dullards to appreciate. I wonder if he's considered a second career in designing topologically interesting furniture, upholstered in only the finest convex polyhedra. This book will no doubt become required reading for those in the molecular simulation community and will be especially ideal for those starting out on their phd's.
Minor points: A cursory read has shown a few typographical errors, which should be corrected in future editions. I also found the references at the end of chapters a little unwieldy. It would also have been nice for Wales to have included a bibliography of recommended texts that could be used to take some of the ideas further.

I believed this to be the best book for her trimming level

This was bought as a Christmas gift so my review will only address the initial look and feel of the product, but not the longevity of it.

I had to look for quite a while for a spanish written book for my mother-in-law. In the end, I believed this to be the best book for her trimming level. It turned out that I was correct. When I received the book, it was a little larger than I initially thought it would be, in a good way, and it had some great illustrated work. The text seemed concise and easy to follow and had an overall quality feel.

I can possibly add some more comments after my mother-in-law has had it for a while. Good choice for the spanish only reader though.
